BRIEF HISTORY OF INTERNET

CPE322 – COMPUTER NETWORKS AND SECURITY

INSTRUCTOR, BSPCE
Introduction

The Internet is an
increasingly important part
of everyday life for people
around the world.
What is Internet?
Is a global network of
computers and other
electronic devices.
With the use of Internet,
it is possible to access
information, and
communicate with other
client across the globe.
What is the World Wide Web?

World Wide Web is a collection

ofdifferent websites you can
access through the Internet.
What is the World Wide Web?

Website
- is made up of related text,
images, and other resources.

- It can resemble forms of

media or they can be interactive in
a way that's unique to computers.
BRIEF HISTORY OF INTERNET
History of the Internet

In 1969, US Department
of Defense initiated research
into joining the computers of
defense centers into a
network. This network
became known as
ARPANET.
Advanced Research Projects Agency
Network (ARPANET)
ARPANET is the first
wide-area packet-switched
network with distributed
control and one of the first
networks to implement the
TCP/IP protocol suite. Both
technologies became the
technical foundation of the
Internet.
1960s
Voice transmission in
WAN became increasingly
common among telephone
networks.

This resulted in the arrival

of high speed digital
channels which allowed
simultaneous transmission of
tens and thousands of
voiced conversations.
1970s

First Local Area Networks have

been developed.

Grosch’s Law ceased to

represent reality, since a dozen
minicomputers, having the same
cost as one mainframe, were
capable of accomplishing some
tasks much faster.
1980s
The start of the commercial
use of the Internet

High speed data exchange

allowed network developers to
implement range of services in
LANs. These services included
broad capabilities of accessing and
using files stored on the hard disks
of other networked computers;
sharing printing devices, modems,
and faxes; accessing centralized
databases; and e-mail.
1990s

The World Wide Web (WWW),

a hypertext information service
that became the main information
service on the Inter- net.

Finally, it is necessary to
mention that newer technologies
continue to emerge. They were
initially intended for both kinds of
networks.
