1958
In 1958, Henry Sy Sr. Henry Sy established a
shoe store in Carriedo, it is the central
business district of Manila. His aggressive and
adamant strategy help him gain large profit
within a few years and later expand his
business in Quiapo to become a fully
functioning department store named “Shoe
mart”, specializing in sales of shoes, it is
where the store originally was. And the shoe
mart later called as “SM” and become
commonly known as that by the local people.
1960 In the 1960s, Shoemart expanded its
shoe store chain, and became one of
the pioneers in the new urban centers
in Makati and Cubao.
1972
In 1972, SM Quiapo
(also known as SM
Clearance Outlet
and SM Carriedo) is
the first SM Store
opened.
1985

In 1985 was the opening of the first shopping center, SM City North
EDSA during a time of a major political and economic crisis. But the
mall was an instant success, paving way for the so-called malling
phenomenon in the Philippines. Malls became part of the Filipino
lifestyle, places were families and friends could shop together, dine
together, and have fun together in world class surroundings.
2001
In 2001, SM
Hypermarket,

2005
In 2005, the SM
Investments
Corporation
was
inaugurated.
2006
In 2006, This is the same year
that SM Mall of Asia opened
in the scenic Manila Bay in
Pasay City. It spans 400,000
sqm, the largest mall back
then and was the anchor
development in the Mall of
Asia Complex; SMDC
launches its first high-rise
project, Mezza Residences.
Today, SM has close to a thousand retail stores and 70 malls in the Philippines, and 7
malls in China.

PRESENT
Through its property arm, SM Prime Holdings, SM has also become a leading
developer of residential condominiums in Metro Manila, where residents could live
like a star at affordable prices. Through SM Hotels and Conventions, the company
now owns and operates world class hotels, a state-of-the-art arena, convention and
exhibition centers, and premier beach and mountain resorts.
SM’s main bank, BDO is the country’s largest bank in terms of resources, deposits,
and loans.
