INTRODUCTION TO

THE CARDIOVASCULAR
SYSTEM
CIRCULATORY /
CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM

Objectives: learn main organs, learn the path

of blood flow in the body, and basic functions
CIRCULATORY /
CARDIOVASCULAR
SYSTEM

What is it?
Circulatory / cardiovascular system
• Role: Transports
substances throughout
the body

• Circulates oxygen, CO2

heat, water, nutrients,
wastes

• Major organs: Heart,

Arteries, Veins
Functions
• The organ system that transports nutrients
throughout the body, fights infection, carries
oxygen and waste, and seals off damaged skin.

• Three parts:
• Heart-Pumps the blood
• Blood vessel- conduits through
which blood flows
• Blood-substance which carries the
materials being transported.

HQ TIME: About how much blood
does your heart pump each day?

If you prick your finger or scrape your knee, you'll see some droplets of blood form. Just
by eye, these droplets may seem to be made of uniform red liquid, similar to paint.
However, if you were to look under a microscope, you would see that your blood is
actually a mixture of liquid and cells.
(mostly water)

hormones
Red blood cells,
or erythrocytes,
deliver oxygen to
surrounding tissue
and remove waster.
White blood cells, or leukocytes,
are involved in immune
responses. They recognize and
destroy invaders such as bacteria
and viruses.
Platelets: body’s repairers.

-if any part of the body is

damaged, platelet cells rush
to the scene to form clots or
scabs.
Pulse Activity
Conclusion:
When you do energetic activities, your pulse rate _____________

When you at rest, your pulse rate _______________.

What sound does the heart make?

What exactly makes that sound?

• A healthy heart makes a lub-dub sound with each beat. This
sound comes from the valves shutting on the blood inside the
heart. The first sound (the lub) happens when the mitral and
tricuspid valves close. The next sound (the dub) happens when
the aortic and pulmonary valves close after the blood has been
squeezed out of the heart.

High Blood Pressure
Also called
“Hypertension”
• Forces the heart to work
harder, may weaken or
damage the heart muscle
and blood vessels
• More likely to develop
coronary heart disease
• Increases the risk of heart
attack or stroke
Embolism
Artery that is blocked by
a blood clot or air bubble
Leukemia
