1.Objectives of CBE
General Objectives
Produce competent professionals who are
responsive to the felt needs of the community
through development approach and contribute
to improve the livelihood of society by
involving the community and stakeholders in
community development.
Produce professionals who are socially
accountable and ensure lifelong learning in the
community through integrating training,
research and services in the community.
Specific Objectives
Produce competent professionals who are
responsive to the felt needs of society
Redirect the learning approach into
participatory, team learning by taking into
account the development needs of the
community
Ensure participatory development by involving
the community in the problem identification and
solving process.
Empower the community to address their
development needs within local resources and
ensure sustainability of the development
projects.

government organizations and contribute in

Promote development through
multidisciplinary and team approach
Undertake community based research to

2. Four strategies/parts of CBE
In order to realize the educational
philosophy of CBE, JU has developed four
strategies/parts which are:
•CBTP(Community based training
program)
•TTP(Team Training Program)
•DTTP(Developmental Team Training
program)
•SRP(Student Research Program)

3. Meaning of CBTP
CBTP=COMMUITY BASED TRAING
PROGRAM

•CBTP is one of the components/parts of CBE.
It starts from first year and extends to second year
in different colleges.
In each year students will be exposed to courses
which are prerequisite courses to implement CBTP.
The quality and depth of CBTP are expected to be
improved in the subsequent phase of CBTP. CBTP is
implemented in different phases and the number of
CBTP phases depend on the number of years in a
program which is given by a college. This will be
done on the principle of N-1. For example, Colleges
like CSSH which have three years undergraduate
programs will run two CBTP phases: CBTP I & CBTP II
4.Specific Objectives of CBTP
After successful completion of the course, the
students will be able to
Appreciate cultural heritage, social values and
practices in the community
Comment on the community interaction with
regard to their influence on one another
Diagnose prevailing community problems and
suggest possible solutions
Reflect on experiences they gained from the
exposure to the community
Develop the sprit of working in a team,
Develop tolerance, commitment, vigor and
perseverance
integrate theory with practice
5.Procedures to carry out CBTP
Formation of team (10-15 under graduate students)
and naming of the team leaders and rapporteur, and
this will be done by the respective departments.
Assignment of supervisory team leaders and
supervisors, this will be done by the respective
departments and CBE coordinators of colleges
Giving orientation to students and supervisors
which could be organized by coordinators of CBE and
supervisors.
Going to the site and collecting base line data.

submitting the report
6. Activities which are expected from Students
during CBTP I
The following activities are expected from Students who
will go out for their CBTP I:
 understand their CBTP site and
 collect base line information/data which will serve them
to run their second phase of CBTP.

During their base line data collection and situation


analysis, the students will develop data gathering
instruments based on the following key features:
1. Collecting demographic data and mapping and zoning
the community under study.
2. Collecting data regarding Socio-economic
characteristics of the community (e.g. education ,health
services, communication, power & energy, service
rendering institutions, education services, etc.)

3.Collecting secondary data on climatic, geographic
characteristics of their site.
4.Collecting data on cultural aspects of the community
( e.g. staple food, marriage, burial ceremony,
languages, community driven intuitions or
indigenous knowledge, etc)
5. Collecting data on the resource endowed by the
community (e.g. non-farm and farm income, land use
pattern, animals, forest, grazing land, communal
land, farm implements, water resources, etc)
6.Collecting data about the productively of crops,
animals enterprises, etc .
7. Collecting data about administrative services
8. Identifying and ranking problems of the community
9. Report writing , documentation, presentation in
symposium and finally submitting the report to CBE
office.
7.Duties & responsibilities of Supervisory Team Leader
The team leader is directly accountable to the College
CBE coordinator
Plans, directs, coordinates and monitors overall activities
of the team.
Confirms that fieldwork is started on time as scheduled
and facilitates the work of the team.
Schedules supervision date and time for supervisory team
members.
Conduct regular supervisory team members` meeting to
discuss student performance.
Compiles reports submitted by each supervisory team
member, students` group leader and submits to the CBE
coordinating office.
Makes sure that students receive proper supervision,
guidance and consultation from members of the
supervisory team.
Performs all other tasks assigned by the CBE coordinator.
8.Duties & Responsibilities of Supervisors
provide continuous guidance and support to
students assigned in the program and are expected to
accomplish the following:
Generate a conducive educational atmosphere
through discussion on application of concepts and
principles of CBE
Help students in selecting study design, population,
measurements etc
Guide students in developing survey instruments,
data collection, application of statistical methods in
analysis and presentation of the results of the study

Prepare daily reports and compile the reports, give feed
back to the team leader about students’ assessment and
program evaluation at the end of each CBE training
program to the supervisory team leader.
Lead the presentation of the findings of the study during
CBTP symposium.
Do all other tasks assigned by the supervisory team
leader.
Coordinate, direct and monitor overall activities of the
team
Confirm that the field work is started on time as per the
schedule and facilitate the work of their team
Make sure that the students work in collaboration with the
communities / kebeles, governmental agencies.
9.Duties & Responsibilities of all Students
All students:
Should be disciplined while involved in CBTP
activities
Should be punctual during the day to day
activity of the group
Should discharge individual and group tasks
assigned to him/her
Should actively participate in group meetings
Should participate in implementation and
evaluation activities
Should participate in all CBTP activities and
report writing
Should do all other tasks assigned to him/her
by the group team leader.
10. Duties & Responsibilities of students team
leader
The Student team leader is selected by the students and
will have the following job description:
She/he is directly responsible to supervisory team
leader and supervisors.
Organizes, leads and plays a role model to other
students
Takes attendances of the students every day
Assigns specific and individual tasks to members
Leads team student members meetings
Participates in evaluation of the students
Makes sure that all necessary materials to be used in
the program are available before hand
Participates in all CBTP activities and produces reports

11. Duties & Responsibilities of students team
rapporteur
The rapporteur of the student team is selected by the
students democratically and will have the following job
descriptions:
He/she is directly responsible to students team leader
Organizes the students in the write-up process of the
team report.
Compiles findings and jobs accomplished by the team in
the symposium.
Assists the student team leader in leading and
organizing activities
Represents the student team leader during his/her
absence.
Presents the findings of the study during CBTP
symposium

12. Duties & Responsibilities of students`
team logistic personnel
The students’ logistic personnel will have the
following tasks:
They will be responsible to communicate logistic
related issues to the college CBE coordinator in
collaboration with the student team leader.
They organize, provide logistic related issues to
students.

15. Students’ Performance Evaluation During CBTP
Students who will go out for CBTP practice will be continuously
evaluated by supervisors , peers and community leaders. In
addition, they will be evaluated by taking written exam and the
written report they produce. The grading system will be based on
senate legislation . students should be evaluated continuously or
graded as follows in CBTP:
