The battle of red bank was a battle fought during the american
revolutionary war, it took place on october 22, 1777. What happened
was a British and Hessian army was dispatched to attack Fort Mercer
on the Delaware River's left bank (or New Jersey side) immediately
south of Philadelphia, but was severely beaten by a far inferior number
of Colonial defenders. (Hessians were German soldiers who served as
auxiliaries to the British army during the American revolutionary war).
Six days after his troops marched into Philadelphia, the British
campaign to clear the Delaware River of American forces began. They
authorized an attack on Fort Billingsport while still in Germantown.
The New Jersey militia garrison spiked its weapons, set fire to the
barracks, and escaped just before the British invasion. They hacked
through the chevaux, allowing the British ships to pass. The americans
strategy was to try and deny the British use of the city by blockading
the delaware river.
