Week 3..

[H+] = 10-5
i.e
Just do this
pH + pOH = 14
Since our pH from the last calculation is 5;
5 + pOH = 14
pOH = 14 – 5
pOH = 9
Worked Example
Solution
H2SO4 2H+ + SO42- since H+ has 2 molecules,
H+ = [2 x 0.005] moldm-3
H+ = 0.01 = 1 x 10-2
pH = -log [H+]
pH = -log [1 x 10-2]
MORE SOLVED EXAMPLES
pH = -log[H+]
HCl H+ + Cl-
= -log [0.0235]
= 1.629 ( pH is Acidic )
2. What is the pOH of a 0.0235 M HCl solution?
HCl H+ + Cl-
[H+] = 0.0235
pH = -log[H+]
pH = -log(0.0235)
pH = 1.629
pH + pOH = 14
pOH = 14 - 1.629
pOH = 12.371
3. What is the pOH of a 6.2 x 10-5 M NaOH solution, Hence calculate the pH?
pOH = -log[OH-]
= -log(6.2 x 10-5)
= 4.21
pH + pOH = 14
pH = 14.00 – pOH
= 14.00 – 4.21
pH = 9.79
So,
- If you are asked to find the concentration of hydrogen ion or
hydroxonium ion concentration, it simply mean find the pH
