Phonological Awareness
Say: Let’s play a guessing game! I will say two words. If the
words start with the same sound, give me a thumbs-up. If
they don’t, give me a thumbs-down. Each time you answer
correctly, I will reveal a little piece of the picture that is
hiding behind the blue box. Once we’re done, you can
guess the picture!
Listen to the first two words: cat, dog. Cat begins with /k/
and dog begins with /d/. Give me a thumbs-up if cat and
dog start with the same sound. If they don’t, give me a
thumbs-down. Nice work! Cat and dog start with different
sounds. Now I will reveal the first piece of the picture.

Nice work! Now it’s your turn to come up
with some alliterative words! I will say a
word. You will say words that have the
same beginning sound. Call on children one
at a time to say a word that has the same
beginning sound as the word you say. Then
challenge them to use the words in a
sentence and create alliteration.
