INTRODUCTION

• Designing a well completion requires information from various

other disciplines such as drilling engineering, reservoir
engineering and geosciences.

• To enable this process it is necessary to describe the architectural

components of a completion, particularly;

-Reservoir and wellbore interface

-Casing and tubing interface

-Tubing and wellhead interface

FACTORS INFLUENCING COMPLETION DESIGN

1) Defining well barriers

• One of the most important tasks in present day completion design
is to understand and identify the well safety requirements.
Formation and other pressurized fluids must be contained within
the wellbore to prevent their uncontrolled release and
consequential serious risk to life, property and the environment.
Such containment is usually mechanical and is provided by the
installation of appropriate well safety barriers.
• Well barriers maybe surface or subsurface, they include; safety
valves which are retrievable, packers which are permanent or
retrievable etc.
FACTORS INFLUENCING COMPLETION DESIGN

2) Defining equipment materials and sealing systems

• Of primary importance are the formation strength, reservoir
temperature and pressure and the characteristics of its fluids-
especially the content like C02, H2S and chloride content.
• Formation strength has a major role in the sense that
unconsolidated formations are required to complete a well with
sand control completion to ensure production without any damage
to downhole and surface equipment.
• High temperature will quickly degrade some components.
• Reservoir pressure directly affects the pressure rating in all
completions.
• H2S, chloride and CO2 content will accelerate corrosion hence the
string should be designed to facilitate corrosion inhibitor injection
also the type of flow of the fluid.
FACTORS INFLUENCING COMPLETION DESIGN

• The sealing materials most commonly used for both downhole

and surface equipment are elastomers and polymers. Varieties of
these are available for different dynamic and environmental
requirements.

• Also to be considered is the financial aspect of selecting a particular

material and the impact it will have on overall projected costs.
FACTORS INFLUENCING COMPLETION DESIGN

3) Reservoir Considerations

Production Zone Isolation

• Consideration of reservoir management and regulatory

requirements will determine the zonal isolation in thick pay zones
or multiple zone completions.

• With zones of significant different inflow performance

characteristics, then it may be more economic to segregate
production.

• Tubing Design
The primary functions of the tubing string are to serve as a flow conduit for
production, injection and maintenance or treatment fluids while maintaining pressure
integrity under all likely operating conditions. Tubing strings rarely fail during routine
production operations except through pipe deterioration resulting from corrosion,
fatigue or underestimation of the thermal effects in high temperature wells.

• Tubing Hanger
A device is set in the tree or the wellhead and suspends the production tubing and/or
casing.

• Safety Valve
- Of all the various types of flow control and well isolation
equipment used in oil and gas wells, the principal and most common
is the safety valve.
- The primary purpose is that it allows the shutting in of the well in
an emergency
- There are wireline and tubing retrievable safety valves.
- The setting depth of the safety valve is critical
- SCSSV- Surface Controlled Subsurface Safety Valves are the most
commonly used safety valves
- Safety valves are supplied by various manufacturers such as
Schlumberger, Halliburton, Baker etc.

• Gas Lift Mandrel

• It is an artificial lift method
• Gas lift is used in oil wells that have insufficient reservoir pressure
to produce the well.
• The process involves injecting gas through the tubing-
casing annulus.
• Injected gas aerates the fluid to reduce its density.

Nipples
• Nipples are an integral part of the completion and are made up in
the string as it is being run into the well. There are different types
of nipples no go nipples, x nipple, f nipple.
• They have a seal area and locking profile.
COMPLETIONS DESIGN
Packers
• Packers are essential to a great number of completions by
physically isolating the casing or tubing annulus from the
production zone. They also contribute to both well safety and
production flow stability.
• Packer is usually set just above the producing interval from the
casing annulus or from the producing zones elsewhere in the
wellbore.
• Packers are available for setting with drill pipe, production tubing
and wireline tubing.
• Packers are classified by the setting mechanism, permanency in
the well and type of completion.

Permanent Downhole Gauge (PDG)
• It is a pressure and/or temperature gauge permanently installed in
an oil/gas well.
• Typically installed in the tubing well and can measure the tubing
pressure or annulus pressure or both.
• The data that PDGs provide are useful to Reservoir Engineers in
determining the quantities of oil or gas contained below the Earth's
surface in an oil or gas reservoir and also which method of
production is best.
• They are installed in oil and gas wells for the purposes of
observation and optimization.

SCREENS
A well screen is a filtering device that serves as the intake portion of
wells constructed in unconsolidated or semi-consolidated formation.
COMPLETION DESIGN
XMAS TREE
• It serves as a control point.
• An assembly of valves, spools, pressure gauges and chokes fitted to
the wellhead of a completed well to control production.
• It must handle flow, pressure, access, surveillance and other
activities through the life of the well.
