SOLVING WORD PROBLEMS

INVOLVING ALGEBRAIC
EXPRESSIONS AND
EQUATIONS
QUARTER 3 WEEK 4
EXAMPLE #1:
• If thrice a number is increased by 11, the result is 35. What is
the number?
Let x be the number.

Thrice a number is increased by 11, the result is 35.

3x + 11 = 35

ALGEBRAIC EQUATION: 3x + 11 = 35
SOLVING THE EQUATION
3x + 11 = 35
3x = 35 - 11
3x = 24
3x = 24
3 3
3x = 24
3 3
•x = 8
Check the result
3x + 11 = 35
3 (8) + 11 = 35
24 + 11 = 35
35 = 35
EXAMPLE #2:
• Seven less than twice a number is 15. What is the
number?
Let y be the number.
Seven less than twice a number is 15.
2y - 7 = 15

ALGEBRAIC EQUATION: 2y - 7 = 15
SOLVING THE
EQUATION
2y - 7 = 15
2y = 15 + 7
2y = 22
2y = 22
2 2
2y = 22
2 2
• y = 11
Check the result
2y - 7 = 15
2(11) - 7 = 15
22 - 7 = 15
15 = 15
EXAMPLE #3:
• Eight less five times a number is three times the
number. What is the number?
Let m be the number.

Eight less five times a number is three times the

number.
8 - 5m = 3m
SOLVING THE EQUATION
8 - 5m = 3m
8 = 3m + 5m
8 = 8m
8 = 8m
8 8
8 = 8m
8 8
•1 = m
Check the result
8 - 5m = 3m
8 - 5(1) = 3(1)
8-5=3
3=3
EXAMPLE #4:
• Thirteen times a number is equal to the number increased
by 24. What is the number?
Let n be the number.

Thirteen times a number is equal to the number increased

by 24.
13n = n + 24
ALGEBRAIC EQUATION: 13n = n + 24
SOLVING THE EQUATION
13n = n + 24
13n - n = 24
12n = 24
12n = 24
12 12
12n = 24
12 12
•n = 2
Check the result
13n = n + 24
13 (2) = 2 + 24
26 = 2 + 24
26 = 26
