introduced to a little known or unknown language of instruction in
school, the better they will learn it, even though that language is not
widely used in the home or community.

idea or task helps them to “discover” the new idea and use it
meaningfully.
Application: Find out what the students already know about a topic.
Then provide activities that let them use their knowledge to learn the
new concept or task.

non-threatening and meaningful and when they can take “small steps”
that help them gain confidence in their ability to use the language
