SANTORINI

INTRODUCTION

Santorini is a little archipelago formed by volcanic


islads, located in the South of the Aegean Sea,
approximately 200 kilometers from Greek mainland.
It has an área of 73 km2 and 13.402 inhabitants

HISTORY

The name of “Santorini” has Italian origin, because


of the medieval Venetian merchants, who gave it the
name of “Saint Irene” in honor to Saint Irene of
Tesalonica, a Greek city.

WEATHER
In general, Santorini has a semi-arid climate. The high
season that is between May and September is hot and
dry. From October to April, the weather is moderate
with some rain.

WHAT TO EAT IN SANTORINI?

There is a list of five


typical Greek dishes to
eat in Santorini.

1. SAGANAKI This typical food has a
principal and unique
ingredient: KEFALOTYRI
CHEESE. It is served breaded
and fried in olive oil. In some
places servit with brandy and
burn it.

2. MOUSSAKA

It’s a kind of cake made


with aubergine. The
preparation includes
lamb meat, tomato and
béchamel, and then it’s
baked.

3. GYROS

This is a kind of
sándwich with roast meat
and you can add it onion,
tomatoes, potatoes and
sauces.

4. GREEK SALAD
This is a way to get into the
Greek gastronomy. Its
ingredients are fresh and
varied: tomatoes, onion,
cucumber, peppers and fresh
olives. But the star ingredient
is the feta cheese, that is
sometimes added in cubes or
in larger sheet.

5. OCTOPUS ON THE GRILL
Grilled octopus is a
specialty in Greece.
They cook it twice.
First they boil it, then
they let it marinate
and finally they put it
on the grill. This
typical Greek food is
one of the star
recipes of Greece.

HOW TO TRAVEL TO SANTORINI?
From Colombia, the better and cheaper option is to fly from
Bogota to Athens. This flight is for about 15 hours. When you
arrive to Athens, you should take a train around one hour to
Piraeus. Finally, you must take a ferry which will take you to
the port of the island of Santorini, for about 5 hours. All of this
has a price around $1.417 USD. And the prices for hotel rooms,
from $47 USD.
