ACTIVITY 2: PROPERTIES OF SOLUTIONS

OBJECTIVES
• Compare the evidence gathered
with the predictions you made.
• Describe the properties of solutions
based on observations.
MATERIALS NEEDED
• 6 cups water
• 6 pieces spoons
• Cheese cloth/ old white tshirt
• 2 table spoon each of the following: sugar, salt, mongo seeds, powdered
juice, cooking oil and vinegar
• 12 clear bottle cups
• 2 pcs. Measuring spoon (1/2 tsp. and 1 tsp)
• 2 pcs. Measuring cup(1 cup and ½ cup)
• 3 funnels
PROCEDURE
• Predict among the given samples will dissolve in water. Write your
predictions in Column 2 of table 1
• Put 1 cup of water in each cups.
• Add ½ teaspoon of each of the 6 samples. Use the teaspoon as much as
possible. Use different teaspoon for each of the cup.
• Describe the mixture that resulted after mixing. Write your answer in
Column 3.
• How many phases do you observe? Write your answer in Column 4.
• Identify the solute in each of the mixtures. Write your answer in the
blank.
4. Filter the mixture using the cheese cloth/ white t-shirt .
Use the funnel.
• In which mixture were you able to separate the
components(solute and solvent) by filtration? Write your
observation in Column 5 of Table 1.
•Which of the samples are solutions? Write your answer in
Column 6.

ANALYSIS

• What are the properties of solutions?

• Can you separate the solute from the
solvent in solutions?
• What is the appearance of solution?
• Solutions are homogeneous. It is a
mixture of one phase only. The
components are so well mixed that all
parts of the solution appear the same.
Solutions have the same composition
and properties through out.
• The solute cannot be separated
from the solvent through filtration
because there are so small that
they pass through the cloth.
• A solution is often clear and
transparent.
APPLICATION

• Get a partner.
• Think of a solution. Describe
it. And give its importance.
FILL –IN THE BLANKS WITH THE CORRECT
ANSWER.

1. Solutions are
_____(heterogeneous
or homogeneous)
2. Solute (can , can’t )
be separated.
3. Solutions have
(one , two , three)
phase/s.
4. Solutions are
often (opaque,
clear)
5. Solutions have
(uniform, not uniform)
appearance.
