Background Case Description Interventions

Medial Malleolus & Medial Talus
Bone Contusion • 20-year-old male patient – College Sophomore
A bone contusion is a common injury that is less severe than a Health Condition
• Sporting team: Varsity Men's Soccer
bone fracture, resulting in an injury to the bone on a microscopic Medial Malleolus and Medial Talus Bone Contusion and a
level. Any type of injury can cause a bone bruise such as sporting Nondisplaced Medial Talus Fracture
injuries, motor vehicle accidents, or falls from a great height.
There will not be a discreet or visible fracture line on an Xray or Injury Presentation
advanced imaging such as an MRI or CT scan.
• Initial Injury occurred on 9/04/2022 –Soccer Season
Treatment Options: • MOI: Jumped to receive ball and landed on the Lat. Side of L Ankle
• Rest
• Ice • Nature: Acute Body Function & Structure Activity Participation
• NSAIDs Difficulty walking and running on Unable to participate in athletic
• Body Part: L Ankle ROM limited due to effusion
• Brace uneven surfaces, ambulation of stairs, activity
Strength: unable to be tested Cutting/lateral Movements
• Immediate Effusion
Nondisplaced Medial Talus Fracture
Talus fractures result from high impact trauma such as car • ROM: Limited due to effusion
collisions or falls from a great height. They will be classified by • Strength: Not tested due to pain
how much the piece of the bone moved out of its normal position.
There are three types: • Special Test: Ant. Drawer (+), Talar Tilt (+)

Minimally Displaced – fracture barely out of

• Differential Diagnosis: Avulsion Fx, Lat ligament compromise Environmental Factors
Personal Factors External factor: not being able to
place, bone will line up correctly or almost correctly
Transfer Student, participate in athletes and college lifestyle
Displaced Fracture – Bone breaks and pieces
move out of anatomical position College Sophomore Internal factors: Unable to live his
lifestyle as actively as he wants
Open Fracture- Bone breaks through the skin Examination
Surgical vs. Nonsurgical
Nonsurgical Lower Extremity
Functional Scale Score
Stable, well-aligned fractures can be treated without surgery. This
will typically be done with a combination of immobilization and   Daily Living Sports Subscale

For bones that are out of place, surgery will set and stabilize the
broken pieces. The patient will undergo an Open Reduction and Reported feeling “Severely Abnormal” for all visits
Internal Fixation. During this, the fragments are first repositioned In conclusion, this patient has
then held together with screws or metal plates and screws been in a non-weight bearing boot
and crutches for the past six weeks.
After meeting with the doctor on
