MAGNETI

C
COMPASS
DESCRIPTION
The magnetic compass is a device
aligns with the earth's magnetic field
and indicates direction by always
pointing north and south
HISTORY
• A magnetic tool used for
navigation
• Estimated first compass during
Song Dynasty 1040-44
• Early compasses were made from
Lodestone, suspended or in water.
• Showed up in the 14th century, in
Europe where sea trade and
military was more important.
• Compass rose
problems that it
solved
• Less of a chance of getting
lost at sea
• Navigation in stormy
condition
• Increased trade with the
world
IMPACT
• Allowed for trade across the world
• 1701 Edmund Halley crea6ted a chart that showed the
angle between true north and magnetic north at
different points in the Atlantic Ocean
• 1820 Danish Scientist Hans Christian Orsted used a
compass to show that current flowing through a wire
created a magnetic feild
• 1831 Michael Faraday showed that moving a
conductor in a magnetic field caused an electric
current which lead to advancements in electric power.

LASTING
IMPACT
The magnetic compass has not changed
too much since it's invention,
• Still use magnetized needles
• There are still dry, and liquid
compasses
• Used in ships, aircrafts, cars, and
for lan navigation
• Now in smartphones
