GOOD AFTERNOON

GRADE VI!
Let’s have a
review!

between two surfaces, sticking or
touching together. Who am I?

Causes of Friction
In general, smooth surfaces produce less
friction than rough surfaces.
The strength of the force of friction
depends on two factors:
* How hard the surfaces push together
* The types of surfaces involved
• Friction also increases if surfaces
push hard against each other.
• If you rub your hands together
forcefully, there is more friction
than if you rub your hands together
lightly.
• Friction acts in a direction opposite
to the direction of the object’s
motion.
• Without friction, a moving object
might not stop until it strikes
another object.

Four types of
Friction
C S TAI T
STATIC
1. Static Friction –
acts on object when
they are resting on a
surface.
Examples of Static Friction

a book resting on the table

potted plants on a sidewalk

GNSILDI
SLIDING
2. Sliding Friction – is
friction that acts on
object when they are
sliding over a surface.
Examples of Sliding Friction

writing on a piece of paper

ironing a cloth
RLLIOGN
ROLLING
3. Rolling Friction – is
a friction that acts on
object when they are
rolling over a surface.
Examples of Rolling Friction

riding a bicycle

rolling a ball on a bowling lane

FULDI
FLUID
4. Fluid Friction – acts on object
that are moving through fluid. All
gases and liquids are fluids.
Fluids, such as water, oil, or air,
are materials that flow easily.
Examples of Fluid Friction

boat sailing on the sea

flying airplane
Evaluation: Identify if the following are static
friction, sliding friction, rolling friction, or
fluid friction.
_____1. Friction that occurs when object moves through
liquid or gas.
_____2. Friction when two solid objects slide over each
other.
_____3. Oil between machine parts.
_____4. Wheels of a shopping cart.
_____5. Pushing a heavy table and not able to move it.
