TECHNIQUES
Skills, Techniques and Production in
Contemporary Art
Many contemporary artists are self-taught and did
not have formal education.
Concerned with the development of their talent and
skills in art making, they study on their own, interact
with artists and read a lot about lives of artists and
their artworks.
Skills, Techniques and
Production in
Contemporary Art
COLLAGE
It is a technique of an art
production used in visual arts,
where the artwork is made from an
assemblage of different forms, thus
creating a new whole.

It is made by adhering flat elements

such as newspaper or magazine cut-
outs, printed texts, illustrations,
photographs, cloth, string, etc. to a
flat surface to create a thick layer
that is almost like a relief sculpture.
DECALCOMANIA
It is the process of applying
gouache to paper or glass then
transferring a reversal of that
image onto canvas or other flat
materials.

Decalcomania is a blotting
process whereby paint is
squeezed between two surfaces
to create a mirror image.
DECOUPAGE
It is done by adhering cut-outs of
paper or glass then coating these
with one or more coats or
transparent coating of varnish.

The art or craft of decorating

objects with paper cut-outs.
FROTTAGE
A technique in the visual arts of
obtaining textural effects or images
by rubbing lead, chalk, charcoal,
etc., over paper laid on a granular
or relief like surface.

The impression of the image can be

created by using leaves, woods, wire
screen, or metal with embossed
image or words.
MONTAGE
It is the use for photography or film
where a pictorial image is
juxtaposed or placed overlapping to
make another picture or design.

The process or technique of

selecting, editing, and piecing
together separate sections of film to
form a continuous whole.
DIGITAL APPLICATIONS
It is simply a computer program
created to carry out or facilitate a
task on a computing device.

For art viewing, it is another

technique. It comes with augmented
reality technology. It transforms
Filipino digital artworks into
immersive experiences.
TRAPUNTO
Coming from the Italian word,
trapungere, meaning to embroider.

This is the technique used by Pacita

Abad where her canvas are padded,
sewn, and often filled with sequins,
beads, shells, buttons and other
things that she picks up from her
travels and journeys.
DECOLLAGE
It is the opposite of collage; instead
of an image being built up of all or
parts of existing images, it is created
by cutting, tearing away or
otherwise removing, pieces of an
original image.

The French word decollage

translates into English literally as
"take-off" or "to become unglued"
or "to become unstuck".
MIXED MEDIA ART
It describes artwork in which more
than one medium or material has
been employed. Assemblages,
collages, and sculpture are three
common examples of art using
different media.

Materials used to create mixed

media art include, but are not
limited to, paint, cloth, paper, wood
and found objects.
PRINT MAKING
It is an artistic process based on the
principle of transferring images
from a matrix onto another surface,
most often paper or fabric.

Traditional printmaking techniques

include woodcut, etching, engraving,
and lithography, while modern
artists have expanded available
techniques to include screen
printing.
