Activity 1: Math Puzzle
Direction: Just like ordinary word puzzle based on
the given you will solve and find out what would be
the answer.

Across:
1.)work out
3.) evaluate
5.) evaluate

Down:
2.) ; evaluate
4.) ; workout
6.) evaluate
What is Binary operation?
A binary operation on a set is a function from a subset of
A x A into a set B, i,e.
If * is the binary operation, then a * b € B, for a,b € A x A.

Example: If binary operation is defined under the set of reals
as a * b = a + b – ab.

Find : a.) 2 * 5, b.) -3 * 7, 3. )- 1/2 * -9

Solution:
a.) 2 * 5 = 2 + 5 – 2(5) = -3
b.) -3 * 7 = -3 + 7- (- 3) (7) = 25
c.) - 1/2 * (-9) = - 1/2 + (-9) – (- 1/2)(-9) = -14
Another example:
If , find the following;

a.)
b.)
c.)
Properties of Binary Operation
1.) Commutative Law for *:

Note that wealways point out the operation of division is not
commutative under the set of numbers. For example, 3 ÷ 5 ≠ 5
÷ 3.

2.) Associative Law for *: x*(y*z)=(x*y)*z

So if we gonna use the operation * as a*b=a+b-ab , then to
verify th associative property we have;

Left side: x*(y*z)=x*(y+z-yz)

= x+y+z-yz-x (y+z-yz)
=x+y+z-yz-xy-xz+xyz
Rigth side:
=
=
=

3. Distributive Law for * over o

Notice that there are two binary operations involved in this
property. For example, in algebra, a(b + c) = ab + ac where we
say that multiplication is distributive under addition. There
are two kinds of distributive law and this are as follows:
Left- Distribution Law for * over o: x*(y o z)=(x*y)o (x*z)
Example: Define two binary operations * and o under the set of
real numbers as follows:
a*b=2ab and a o b=a+2b
and
Verify the two distributive laws of under o.
Solution: For left-distributive law of over o:

Left-side:
Right-side:

Right-Distribution Law for over o:
Example: define two binary operations and o under
the set of real numbers as follows:
a*b=2ab and a o b=a+2b
Verify the two distributive laws of * under o.
Solution: for left-distributive law of * over o: x*(y o z)=(x*y)o
(x*z)

Left-side: x*(y o z)=x*(2yz)=x+2(2yz)

Right-side: (x*y ) o (x*z)=(x+2y)o (x+2z)=2 (x+2y)(x+2z)

Thus, the left-distributive law of * over o does not hold.

Activity 2:
1.Define * as a*b=a+ab, compute the ff.
a.) 3*-4
b.) -1/2*3
c.) 1/3*(-1/5)
d.) -3*(-1/4)
e.) -1/2*(-1/4)
Assignment:
For the set of real numbers, define two two binary operations
* and ° as follows:
a*b=ab and a° b=a+b
For every property of the computation below that will not
hold, give one example:
a) Is * commutative?
b) Is ° commutative?
c) Prove or disprove that * is associative.
d) Prove or disprove that ° is associative.
e) Prove or disprove that * left-distributive over °.
f) Prove or disprove that ° left-distributive over *.
