Optimal Study Of

Treatment Plants
Case Study Of Lahore

Group Members:
Muhammad Asadullah Muhammad Ahmed Amin Adnan Farid
Current situation of Lahore:
• Lahore produces 540 MGD(million gallon per day) of sewage which
gets dumped in River Ravi
• Untreated sewage is causing water, land and air pollution
• Ground water is getting polluted due to seepage
• Water-borne diseases arise
• Gastro-intestinal and cancerous hazards arising from sewage water
irrigation
Objectives:
• Harness the usefulness of sewage water for irrigation
• Treatment of sewage water – situation of Waste Water Treatment
Plant
• Check the viability of these plants using Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA)
• Policy formulation for whole plant production
Outcomes:
• Benefits of sewage irrigation for farmers
• Cost reduction in terms of fertilizers and electricity for pumps
• Environmental impact
• Positive externalities as a service project
Scope of our project:

What is What is the

resourceful in resource required
Sewage? by a farmer?

Designing of the
WWTP
Data Collection
• 14 samples of sewage water from different locations in Lahore
• Average amount of nitrogen(N), phosphorous(P) and potassium(K) in
sewage water was determined
Data Collection
• Expert opinion
• 4 types of crops are being farmed around Lahore
• Wheat, Rice, Maize and Potato
• What is the nutritional demand of specific crop?
• Fertilizers currently used by farmers to fulfill NPK demand
Urea
DAP
Potash
Data Collection
• Information related to design of WWTPs
• Literature Review
• Expert Opinions from FMCE, GIKI faculty member
• Critical components to be designed
i. Grit Removal Tank
ii. Sedimentation Tank
iii. Pump specifications/Mesh Size/Scrappers
Methodology
• Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA)
• Why CBA?
Indiscriminate and best decision making tool
Easy to apply and understand
• What is CBA?
Convert the cost and benefit cash-flows to present time over lifetime of 25 years using
PWA
