PROCEDURE FOR LOADING OF

BLAST HOLE

AND

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOLLOWED

2

OBJECTIVE

• Optimal Use of Commercial Explosives.

• Safety of Personnel and Equipment

• Environmental Protection

• Correct Loading

• Prevention of Accidents, Misfires and Low/Weak

Energy Shots.
3

GENERAL INFORMATION

• Coordination of all activities will be under

direction of one designated individual, or
representative designated by him.

• Only qualified y trained and authorized persons

who are at least 21 years of age may load / handle
explosives.

• All pre-loaders must be under continuous

supervision.

• All explosive handlers ,must use high visible and

antistatic turbans/caps, and use gloves
4

EQUIPMENT USED AT THE TIME OF

LOADING
• Non sparking loading poles (Aluminum or Wood with
brass Joints).

• One hole depth checker with non ferrous weight.

• A bamboo or wooden pole, which must be marked at

correct hole depth.

• Brass (Non Ferrous spike)

• Water resistant adhesive tape.

• Ohmmeter (Approved for blasting operation)

• Wire cutter & Red Flags.

5

CARRYING EXPLOSIVES

• Only approved X-Vans, containers/bags can be

used.

• No person shall carry match, mobile phones, radio

transmitter, quartz watches –or-any type of
electronic equipment.

• Detonators will be carried separately from

explosives.

• Personal carrying explosives will remain at least

15 Mtr from person carrying detonators; and all
other persons must be at least 30 Mtr away.
6

CARRYING EXPLOSIVES

• Not more than 15 Kgs of explosives may be

carried by one person.

• Ensure use of antistatic uniform / shoes.

• Ensure that each team has first aid kit.

7

PREPARING THE CHARGES

• Before charging holes must be checked using loading

poles,inrespect of depth and clearance.

• First check the continuity of electric detonators.

• Detonators must be securely placed in explosive cartridge

by using brass/wooden spike to make hole ; by ensuring
to apply minimum steady force.

• Detonators must be completely located inside the charge

with upward direction.

• There must be no kinks or knots in the wires.

• Use proper water resistant adhesive tape.

8

PREPARING THE CHARGES

• Never charge a drill hole until it has cooled down.

• Never charge a drill hole, by using electric

initiation during thunder storms/lightening.

• In case of simultaneous charging / drilling of

holes maintain at least a safe distance of one hole
depth.

• Never strike a primed cartridge.

9

PREPARING THE CHARGES

• Do not use excessive force to ram the charge

down the hole if stuck. Use steady push only.

• No part of body except hands is to be placed

directly over the holes, during charging.

• Use sand/gravel to fill and tamp the holes.

• Retest the detonator circuit after testing, and leg

wires must be shunted together and burry the
shunted portion.
10

POSSIBLE REASONS OF MISFIRE / WEAK

SHOTS

• Wrong desired position of cartridge in holes at the

time of blast.
• Escape of detonation gases in underground
cracks due to varying geology.
• Wrong / Loose placement of detonator in
explosive cartridge, which will not fire explosive
due to more gap, as detonator has to be at least
75% with in explosive column.
• Rupturing of tubes due to forceful tamping to
clear the blocked holes.
