LEARNING OUTCOMES

• To be able to survey a text for basic information


• To be able to skim a text to locate topic sentence,
understand the gist of the text and have a better idea of the
organisation of the text
• To be able to scan to quickly locate the keywords and
question answers
TEST FORMAT

• There are 40 questions and must be done in 60 mins


• The test consists of three section
• The first section  Basic linguistic survival in English, with tasks mainly
concerned with providing factual information
• The second section  Focuses on the work context and involves text of more
complex language. It is practicalities of working in an English-speaking
environment: Job Description, Contracts, and Staff Training Materials
• The third section  Reading more extended text with more complex structure. The
emphasis is on descriptive and instinctive instead of argumentative texts. The
general context relevant to the wide range of reading material such as newspapers,
magazines, books.
SKILLS REQUIRED FOR READING TEST

General skills for Surveying – Skimming – Scanning


• Reading to understand the general idea or main points of the text
• Read text quickly! – don’t stop and try to understand every word
• Read text from start to finish – but not every word
• Look for: keywords, words in bold, headings and titles, pictures
• Focus on information from the first and last sentences of a
paragraph but look over the whole text
