Text-types according to authors Purpose

What is Author’s Purpose?
An author is a person who wrote something.
A purpose is a reason for doing something.
The author’s purpose is the reason why someone wrote something.
There are three main purposes for writing:
1. Persuade- Write text to influence/ convince the reader to do or believe something
Example: Persuasive Essays, Persuasive Speeches, Persuasive Letters, or notes
* Be careful. A text that is written to persuade may also be entertaining or informative, like a
funny commercial.
 
2. Inform- Write text to provide information or to teach something
Example: Expository essays, Nonfiction texts, Instructions, or directions
Some directions, articles, and reports may be entertaining, but the author’s main purpose is
to inform.
 
3. Entertain- Write text to hold readers attention through enjoyment or to give readers
enjoyment
Example: Stories, Poems, Plays
Stories, poems, and plays may teach a lesson, but the author’s main purpose is to entertain.
Read the descriptions of each item and distinguish the text-types
according to purpose (to entertain, persuade, or inform). Write P-if its
purpose is to persuade, I- if it is to inform and E-if it is to Entertain.
Use a separate sheet of paper.
1.A map of the school showing all the emergency exits
2.A Story about a kid overcoming bullies
3.An advisory about an incoming Typhoon in the Country
4.A story about the Frog Prince
5.An advertisement in a magazine to get readers to always observe
health protocols
6.A five-paragraph essay in which the author attempts to convince
readers to recycle more and to be less wasteful
7.A sticker on the trash compactor that shows how to operate it
8.A short story about the lazy and diligent girl
