REFLECTIO

N OF LIGHT
LEARNING COMPETENCY

• Solve problems using the law

of reflection and refraction
(ELTS10FE-IIg-3)
FACTS ABOUT LIGHT

• It is a form of
Electromagnetic
Energy.
• It is a part of the
Electromagnetic
Spectrum and the
only part we can
really see.
FACTS ABOUT LIGHT
Light can be:
The speed of light, •REFLECTED
•ABSORBED
c, is constant in a •REFRACTED
vacuum.
Light is an
electromagnetic wave in
that it has wave like
properties which can be
influenced by electric and
REFLECTION
• BOUNCING of light rays off an object
when it hits a surface.
MIRROR
•Highly polished surface usually
made of glass coated with a thin
layer of silver or aluminum on one
side that is smooth enough to
produce regular reflection of light
incident upon it.
SPHERICAL
PLANE MIRROR MIRROR
- is one with a flat surface - has a reflecting surface taken
from the surface of a sphere
REFLECTION OF • INCIDENT RAY - the ray that
strikes the surface
LIGHT • POINT OF INCIDENCE – the
point at which the incident ray strikes
the mirror
• REFLECTED RAY – the ray
that rebounds from the surface
• NORMAL – a line perpendicular
to the surface at the point of incidence
• ANGLE OF INCIDENCE
(θi) – the angle between the incident
ray and the normal
• ANGLE OF REFLECTION
(θr) – the angle between the
reflected ray and the normal
TYPES OF REFLECTION
• REGULAR or SPECULAR • DIFFUSE REFLECTION
REFLECTION - Reflection from rough surfaces like
- Reflection from smooth surfaces like any surface that we can see but does not
plane mirror that produces a reflected reflect an image.

LAWS OF REFLECTION
1.The angle of
incidence is equal to
the angle of reflection
– that is θi = θr
2.The incident ray, the
normal, and the
reflected ray all lie on
one plane.
Given:
angle of incidence = 35˚
Required:
angle of reflection = ?
angles a and b = ?
Equation:
θi = θr
L = 90˚
Solution:
θi = θr
35˚ = 35˚ = θr

<a + 35˚ = 90˚ <b + 35˚ = 90˚

<a = 90˚ - 35˚ <b = 90˚- 35˚
<a = 55˚ <b = 55˚
Given:
angle b = 50˚
Required:
angle of incidence = ?
angle of reflection = ?
angles a = ?
Equation:
θi = θr
50˚+ θi = 90˚
Solution:
50˚+ θi = 90˚
θi = 90˚- 50˚
Θi = 40˚

θi = θr <a + 40˚ = 90˚

40˚= <a = 90˚- 40˚
40˚= Θr
<a = 50˚
