???
TUBERCULOSIS

Tuberculosis (TB) is a potentially serious infectious disease

that mainly affects the lungs. The bacteria that cause
tuberculosis are spread from person to person through tiny
droplets released into the air via coughs and sneezes.
PULMONARY TB

Pulmonary TB is a bacterial infection of the lungs that can

cause a range of symptoms, including chest pain,
breathlessness, and severe coughing. Pulmonary TB can
be life-threatening if a person does not receive treatment.

WHAT IS D.O.T.S
??????????
DIRECTLY OBSERVED TREATMENT
SHORT-COURSE

It is a comprehensive strategy endorsed by the World Health

Organization (WHO) and International Union Against
Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (IUATLD) to detect and cure TB
patients.
ADVANTAGES OF DOTS

 Cure rates up to 95%

 Prevention of MDR --- TB emergence
 Improvement of longevity of AIDS patients by TB control,
 One of the most cost effective of all health interventions
according to world bank
THE FIVE COMPONENTS OF DOTS

1. Effective political and administrative commitment

2. please finding primarily by microscopic examination of sputum
of patients presenting to health facilities
3. short course chemotherapy given under direct observation
4. an effective drug supply and management system
5. Systematic monitoring and evaluation system
HOW IS DIRECTLY OBSEREVED
THERAPY ADMINISTERED (DOT) ???

 delivering the prescribed medication

 checking for side effects
 watching the patient swallow the medication
 documenting the visit
 answering questions
