INTRODUCTION
• Subway (also known as Doctor's Associates Inc.) is an American
fast food restaurant franchise that primarily sells submarine
sandwiches (subs), salads and beverages. It was founded by the
17 year old Fred DeLuca and financed by Peter Buck in 1965 as
"Pete's Super Submarines" in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The
restaurant renamed to Subway two years later.Subway serves a
array of topping choices allowing the customer to choose which
toppings they want on their sandwich. The past Subway slogan,
"Eat Fresh", was intended to indicate the fresh ingredients used
in their sandwiches.
MISSION
What attracted me to choose this particular company is
their mission and the “why” factor to do business which
is as follows-
We are committed to providing a wide range of great
tasting, healthier food choices while reducing our
environmental footprint and creating a positive
influence in the communities we serve around the
world.
.
vision
• Subway’s vision statement is “be the #1 Quick Service
Restaurant (QSR) franchise in the world, while
delivering fresh, delicious sandwiches and an exceptional
experience.” The emphasis is on the legacy the company
can create in the industry. It has the following elements:
1.#1 QSR in the world
2.Fresh, delicious sandwiches and an exceptional
experience
Henry Fayol's principles application in
subway
• Unity of direction- the store is divided in three sections;
operation, training and human resource development. All these
units are headed by three different individuals and every head
keeps a watch over things under his own unit.
• Division of work- the salesman collects the order which is
passed to the kitchen department who passes the prepared
food to the packaging department and then the item is served.
• Stability of personnel-the employees do not continue in the
service of the company for long. Therefore, company has to
take care of stability of personnel for it’s own interest.
• Renumeration- the employees of this company are not happy
about the renumeration policy of the company and hence the
company lacks behind in observing this principle of management.
• Authority and responsibility- the staff here takes decisions. The
employees have got authority as well as the responsibility
regarding the work assigned to them.
• Initiative- most of the employees felt that their suggestions and
opinions are given importance. Hence the organization promotes
initiation.
• Unity of command- the company has dual subordination i.e one
receives orders from more than one boss. Hence, the unity of
command is not followed.
• Scalar grain- regarding this principle of management, the
employees of any category can contact the boss of the
organisation. Therefore this principle is followed.
• Order- all units had arranged their goods in proper manner,
whenever the goods got scattered due to rush of customers, it
was immediately restored, therefore a proper order was
noticed.
• Centralization- the routine decisions are taken by the
concerned employees whereas the major decisions by higher
authorities.therefore centralization is not applicable.
• Equity- equal wages are given to people doing same jobs. It
can be said that equity exists in subway.
• Subordination of individual interest to general interest- the
employees are taught in their training to keep the unit of
organization at the top level. It can be concluded that
company gives priority to general interest upon individual
interest.
• Discipline- it is generally noticed that the customers are
ignored by the employees.it shows that the employees are not
fulfilling their duty honestly for the company
My unique idea for subway
Subway generally caters to solo orders which are quickly
served and taken mostly by an individual. It is not a collective
family oriented brand that a whole family is interested to go to.
It is mainly a quick healthy snappy sandwich. Therefore I
suggest that subway should open food trucks. A Food truck is
basically a mobile restaurant which can be set up by using your
vehicle – a truck, car (or cart). This is a very cost-effective
approach because you do not need a lot of capital to set one up,
and you don’t really need to worry about the seating
arrangements around which will save costs for the company.
This idea will bring success because of the esteem goodwill the
company already has to serve ‘quick’ healthy subs.
Planning process for installing food trucks-
Not as streamlined as starting a restaurant, starting a food truck requires you
to navigate a few crucial steps-
1. Truck- A brand new commercial truck to use as the base of your food
truck business would cost you between $20,000 – 40,000 or ₹4 – ₹5
lakhs, in India.this is much cheaper than having a proper rental place.
2. Deciding a location- I suggest these trucks should be placed in business
parks, near popular gyms and in the vicinity of a mall as these places will
attract the most number of people ‘niched’ to have subway subs.
3. staff- You’ll need to hire a few staff members and pay for their uniform
and salaries. This figure can vary with the number of people you rope in,
but assuming you take in 3 people, you’d need a little over $8000 or
₹40,000, in India (per month) for salaries and additions. This results in
less money used my company because of less staff.
