The Five sub-disciplines of computing define by ACM :

1) Information Systems (IS)

the field of IS would entail studying applications and

other means of providing better decision making
systems to the business.

MIS – refers to the management of information so

that it could be used in decision making.

The Five sub-disciplines of computing define by ACM :

2) Information Technology (IT).

IT people are users of technology.

They utilize existing operating systems, software, and
applications to solve a specific business problem.
They analyze and explain to a client how to solve technology
problems or work with executives and business owners to
construct a technology plan that will meet their business needs.
They manage everything that is related to IT Resources.

The Five sub-disciplines of computing define by ACM :

3) Computer Science.

Computer science students are Computer scientists. They focus on

the theory of computational applications.
They study the machine itself and understand how and why various
computer processes operate the way they do.
They invent new ways to manipulate and transfer information.

They are generally concerned with software, operating systems, and

implementation.
That means they understand the “why” behind computer programs.

The Five sub-disciplines of computing define by ACM :

4) Computer Engineering.

Computer engineers are the ones who make computer parts work
together.
They are responsible for the research, design, and development of
computer equipment like circuit boards, microchips, routers, video
cards, etc.

They often deal with hardware-to-software integration, meaning

they have to design and build processors and hardware that can
support a given program.

5) Software Engineering.

It is the application of principles used in the field of I.T. or

Computer Engineering, which usually deals with physical systems,
to the design, development, testing, deployment, and management
of software systems.

A Turing machine is a
mathematical model of
computation that defines
an abstract machine that
manipulates symbols on a
strip of tape according to a
table of rules. Despite the
model's simplicity, given
any computer algorithm, a
Turing machine capable of
simulating that algorithm's
logic can be constructed.

Cloud Computing Models

1) Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) refers to the fundamental building blocks of

computing that can be rented.

Examples : physical or virtual servers, storage and networking

2) Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) this includes the tools and software that developers need
to build applications.

Examples : Database management, Operating systems, and Development tools.

3) Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is the delivery of applications-as-a-service, probably

the version of cloud computing that most people are used to on a day-to-day basis.

Examples: Google Apps,

Types of Cloud Computing

1) Public Cloud

Public clouds are owned and operated by a third-

party cloud service providers, which deliver their
computing resources, like servers and storage, over
the Internet.

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO)

2) Private cloud

A private cloud refers to cloud computing

resources used exclusively by a single business
or organization. A private cloud can be
physically located on the company’s on-site
datacenter.

3) Hybrid cloud

Hybrid clouds combine public and private

clouds, bound together by technology that
allows data and applications to be shared
between them.

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO)
Benefits of Cloud Computing

1) Cost

Cloud computing eliminates the capital expense of buying hardware and software and
setting up and running on-site datacenters—the racks of servers, the round-the-clock
electricity for power and cooling, and the IT experts for managing the infrastructure. It
adds up fast.

2) Global scale

The benefits of cloud computing services include the ability to scale elastically. In cloud,
that means delivering the right amount of IT resources—for example, more or less
computing power, storage, bandwidth—right when they’re needed, and from the right
geographic location.
Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO)
Benefits of Cloud Computing

3) Performance

The biggest cloud computing services run on a worldwide network of secure data
centers, which are regularly upgraded to the latest generation of fast and efficient
computing hardware. This offers several benefits over a single corporate datacenter,
including reduced network latency for applications and greater economies of scale.

4) Security

Many cloud providers offer a broad set of policies, technologies, and controls that
strengthen your security posture overall, helping protect your data, apps, and
infrastructure from potential threats.
Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO)
Benefits of Cloud Computing

5) Speed

Most cloud computing services are provided self-service and on-demand, so even vast
amounts of computing resources can be provisioned in minutes, typically with just a few
mouse clicks, giving businesses a lot of flexibility and taking the pressure off capacity
planning.

6) Productivity

On-site datacenters typically require a lot of “racking and stacking”—hardware setup,

software patching, and other time-consuming IT management chores. Cloud computing
removes the need for many of these tasks, so IT teams can spend time on achieving
more important business goals.
Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO)
Benefits of Cloud Computing

7) Reliability

Cloud computing makes data backup, disaster

recovery, and business continuity easier and
less expensive because data can be mirrored
at multiple redundant sites on the cloud
provider’s network.

V) Internet of Things (IoT)

The Internet of things (IoT) is a system of
interrelated computing devices, mechanical
and digital machines provided with unique
identifiers (UIDs) and the ability to transfer
data over a network without requiring
human-to-human or human-to-computer
interaction. Image Source : https://www.cloudwards.net/what-is-the-internet-of-things/

in your house, only hooked up to the internet.
It’s really that simple. So think a thermostat

yet growing exponentially with time. In short
such data is so large and complex that none

Characteristics (ILO)
of a Big Data

(i) Volume – The name Big Data itself is related to a size that is enormous.

(ii) Variety – Variety refers to heterogeneous sources and the nature of data, both
structured and unstructured.

(iii) Velocity – The term 'velocity' refers to the speed of generation of data. How fast the
data is generated and processed to meet the demands, determines real potential in the
data.

(iv) Variability – This refers to the inconsistency which can be shown by the data at
times, thus hampering the process of being able to handle and manage the data
effectively.
