1.2-Overview-Computing Ver2
1.2-Overview-Computing Ver2
The purpose of this lesson is to define what computing is and learn its importance in
daily living. In this lesson, we will also cover the role of the Association for
Computing Machinery (ACM); and in the end, we will discover the trending
technologies in the area of computing.

Computer engineers are the ones who make computer parts work
together.
They are responsible for the research, design, and development of
computer equipment like circuit boards, microchips, routers, video
cards, etc.

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO)
Benefits of Cloud Computing
1) Cost
Cloud computing eliminates the capital expense of buying hardware and software and
setting up and running on-site datacenters—the racks of servers, the round-the-clock
electricity for power and cooling, and the IT experts for managing the infrastructure. It
adds up fast.
2) Global scale
The benefits of cloud computing services include the ability to scale elastically. In cloud,
that means delivering the right amount of IT resources—for example, more or less
computing power, storage, bandwidth—right when they’re needed, and from the right
geographic location.

Benefits of Cloud Computing
3) Performance
The biggest cloud computing services run on a worldwide network of secure data
centers, which are regularly upgraded to the latest generation of fast and efficient
computing hardware. This offers several benefits over a single corporate datacenter,
including reduced network latency for applications and greater economies of scale.
4) Security
Many cloud providers offer a broad set of policies, technologies, and controls that
strengthen your security posture overall, helping protect your data, apps, and
infrastructure from potential threats.

5) Speed
Most cloud computing services are provided self-service and on-demand, so even vast
amounts of computing resources can be provisioned in minutes, typically with just a few
mouse clicks, giving businesses a lot of flexibility and taking the pressure off capacity
planning.

(i) Volume – The name Big Data itself is related to a size that is enormous.
(ii) Variety – Variety refers to heterogeneous sources and the nature of data, both
structured and unstructured.
(iii) Velocity – The term 'velocity' refers to the speed of generation of data. How fast the
data is generated and processed to meet the demands, determines real potential in the
data.
(iv) Variability – This refers to the inconsistency which can be shown by the data at
times, thus hampering the process of being able to handle and manage the data
effectively.
In this lesson, we were able to define that computing is any activity that uses computers
to manage, process, and communicate information. It includes the development of both
hardware and software. Identify the major computing disciplines that include computer
engineering, software engineering, computer science, information systems, and
information technology. Also in this lesson, we were able to understand the role of the
Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and we have discovered some trending
technologies in the area of computing like the following: Artificial intelligence, Cloud
computing, augmented and virtual reality, and internet of things,
