• WHAT IS AN EXPLANATION TEXT?

• Explanation texts are pieces of writing that explain something.

They might tell you how or why something happens, or give
information on how to do something.
• GENERIC STRUCTURE
• TitleThis section is the title of the text, containing what will be the subject to be explained or
described
• General statementIt is located at the beginning paragraph, it tells the phenomenon that has been
issuedIn general, the General statement describes the background of the events (WHY) that are
globally at issue in the form of phenomena or not natural phenomena. This paragraph is placed in the
first part as the opening paragraph.
• Explanationit tells the sequence process of how the phenomenon occurs.The next paragraph explains
the sequence of processes (HOW) the event occurred.
• ClosingThe closing section is optional or not required in this text. It can contain additional
information or the author's opinion on the topic
What are the Key Features of an Explanation Text?
1. Explanation text is typically written in the present tense with formal to-the-point
language that doesn’t deviate from the topic.
2. It uses separate text with headings and subheadings to make the explanation text
simple and easy to understand.
3. Add pictures and diagrams with labels for visual learners.
4. Any technical vocabulary used should fit into a glossary at the end to help with
jargon.
5. Numbered points that explain something step-by-step.
