Mass and Weight

Prepared by: Jerome M. Dela Cruz
What is Mass?

 The quantity of a matter contained in a body is Mass.

What is Weight?

 Weight is the gravitational force acting on a body by a celestial body.

Mass Weight

 SI Unit: Kilogram ( Kg )
 SI Unit: Newton ( N )
 It is determined by ordinary balance.
 Determined by spring balance.
 Mass of a bady can never be zero.
 Weight of a body can be zero, Ex in outerspace.
 Formula M= F/a
MASS WEIGHT

 Weight is the measure of “FORCE”.

 Mass is the measure of “INERTIA”.
 It is a vector quantity.
 It is a scalay quantity.
 It depends on gravity.
 It does not depends on gravity.
 It is denoted by (W)
 It is denoted by (M).
 Weight of a body keeps changing from place
 Mass remain same everywhere.
to place.
WEIGHT:
 Formula : W= m*g
Given Ex: M= 20kg
G= 9.8m/s2
W= ?
W= m*g
W = (20kg) (9.8m/s²)
W = 196 kg m/s2 or
W= 196 N
