Converting Units

of Volume
Conversion of Units is the conversion
between different units of
measurement for the same quantity.

Conversion factor is used to change

the units of a measured quantity
without changing its value.
Volume has 3 dimensions:
Length Width Height

Height

t h
id
W
Length

cubic centimeter is cm 3
How to convert cubic centimeters
to cubic meters and vice versa?

cubic meters (m3) cubic centimeters (cm3) 1 m3 = 1 000 000 cm3

cubic centimeters (cm3) cubic meters (m3) 1 cm3 = 1/1 000 000 m3

liters (L) milliliters (mL) 1 L = 1000 mL

milliliters (mL) cubic centimeters (cm3) 1 mL= 1 cm3

Converting a
Larger Unit to a
Smaller Unit
Example 1:
The Carlo’s family consumes an
average of 235 m of water in a
3

month. How much water is consumed

by the family in cubic centimeters?
Solution:
1 m3 = 1 000 000 cm3

235 m x 1 000 000

3 = 235 000 000cm 3

235 m3 = 235 000 000 cm3

Example 2:

A rectangular plastic container holds

7.5 L of water. How many milliliters
of water does the plastic contain?
Solution:
1 L = 1000 mL

7.5 L x 1 000 = 7 500 mL

7.5 L = 7 500 mL
Converting a
Smaller Unit to a
Larger Unit
Example 1:

An Aquarium has a volume of

3500 cm .
3

What is its volume in cubic

meters?
Solution:
1 cm3 = 1/1 000 000 m3
3 500 cm x
3 1 m3 3 500 m3
=
1 1 000 000 cm 3
1 000 000
= 0.0035 m3
3 500 cm3 = 0.0035 m3
Example 2:

A bottle contains 330 mL

of juice. How many liters
of juice is this?
Solution:
1 cm3 = 1/1 000 000 m3
330 mL x 1L 330 L
=
1 1 000 mL 1 000
= 0.33 L
330 mL = 0.33 L
Solution:
Change 8 cm to mL.
3

1 mL= 1 cm 3

8 cm x 1 = 8 mL
3

8 cm3 = 8 mL
How to convert a larger
unit to a smaller unit?

How to convert a smaller

unit to a larger unit?
To convert a larger unit to
a smaller unit, multiply it
by its equivalent measure.

To convert a smaller unit

to a larger unit, divide it
by its equivalent measure.
Convert each volume to the indicated unit.
Write the correct number on the line.

1. 22 m3 = _____ cm3 6. 2150 mL = _____ cm3

2.13 L = _____ mL 7. 1500 cm3 = _____ m3
3.250 mL = _____ cm3 8. 18 000 mL = _____ cm3
4.405 L = _____ mL 9. 28 000 mL = _____ L
5.1000 mL = _____ cm3 10. 6.5 m3 = _____cm3
