IGNITION SYSTEM

The ignition system’s job is to ignite the air-
fuel mixture in a gasoline engine. In addition
to the spark plugs that spark in the
combustion chambers, the ignition system
consists of an ignition coil, which converts
battery voltage to higher voltage, and the
spark plug wires that join these components.
Advancements have greatly reduced the need
for ignition system service. Where distributor
caps and rotors once needed replacement,
electronic ignitions typically keep on firing. In
new vehicles, spark-plug replacement intervals
are often around 100,000 miles. Spark plug
wires still require attention and occasional
replacement, though an individual coil-on-plug
eliminates those wires entirely.
TYPES OF IGNITION SYSTEM
1. GLOW PLUG IGNITION SYSTEM
Glow plug ignition system
is the oldest of all obsolete
because of its many
limitations.
The glow plug ignition system has a
problem of causing uncontrolled
combustion due to the use of
electrodes as an ignition source,
which is soled later after the
introduction of the Magneto ignition
system in which electrodes are
replaced by the spark plug. Unlike
magneto ignition, the Glow plug
produces high exhaust emission due

Magneto ignition system: it is the
system introduced to overcome the
limitations of the old ignition
system, but it has its own
limitations.
3. ELECTRIC COIL OR BATTERY IGNITION
SYSTEM
-Electric coil ignition or
Battery ignition system- The
system is the latest of all
above and is being used for
a long time due to its better
efficiency and accuracy but
it also shows some
limitations.
• Less efficient with the high-speed engines.
• High maintenance required due to mechanical
and electrical wear of the contact breaker
points

1.Battery
- it is the powerhouse of the
ignition system as it supplies
the necessary energy to the
ignition system. Same as
battery coil ignition system.

2. Ignition switch used in


ignition system which governs
the ON and OFF of the system,
same as the battery coil ignition
system.

3. Ignition Control Module or
Control Unit of Ignition System
it is the device that the receives
voltage signals from the armature
and set the primary coil to ON and
OFF, it can be placed separately
outside the distributor or can be
place in electronic control unit box
of the vehicle.

4. Armature
- contact breaker points of battery ignition
system is replaced by an armature which
consists of a reluctor with teeth (the rotating
part), vacuum advance and pick up coil( to catch
the voltage signals), Electronic module receives
the voltage signals from the armature in order to
make and break the circuit, which in turns sets
the timing of the distributor to accurately
distribute current to the spark plugs.

5. Ignition Coil
Same as the battery ignition
coil system ignition coil is
used in electronic ignition
system to produce high
voltage to the spark plug.

5. Ignition coil
the coil consists the metal casing
containing two sets of insulated wire
windings on a soft-iron central core.
The collapse of the magnetic fields
generated around the primary
windings produce the HT current in
secondary winding which goes
through the distributor to the spark

6. Ignition Distributor
as the name indicates it is the
device use to distribute the current
to the spark plugs of the multi
cylinder engine.

7. Spark Plug
spark plug is used to generate
spark inside the cylinder.
WORKING OF THE IGNITION SYSTEM
• The conventional ignition system consists of
two sets of circuits/windings- primary and
secondary. The battery supplies 12 volts
current to the ignition coil thru the contact
breaker points. It changes the primary
windings and also magnetizes the core of the
coil.
However, the secondary winding is NOT electrically
connected to the primary winding. Its one end is
grounded and other end passes thru a heavily insulated
cable into the distributor cap. When turn on the
ignition switch, the current passes thru the primary
winding to the ground( earth) thru the contact points.
WORKING OF THE IGNITION SYSTEM

The rotating attached to the distributor drive-shaft


is driven by the engine. When the drive-shaft
rotates, it turns the cam. When the cam pushes the
movable breaker arm, it lifts from its seat. Thus,
it breaks the contact. As soon as the contacts
break, it induces the secondary winding with high
voltage current of around 20,000-25,000 vols.
