Quarter 1

Week 1
LESSON 1:
FACTORING
OBJECTIVE:
Factor completely the
polynomials with common
monomial factor.
FLASHBACK
• MULTIPLICATION OF POLYNOMIALS
• LAWS OF EXPONENT

FLA
GIVEN:
SHB
AC-3x(4x + xy - y)
FACTORING:
K
Solution:
Given:

-3x(4x + xy - y)
Solution:
= -3x(4x) + (-3x)(xy) - (-3x)(y)
= =
-3x(4x) + (-3x)(xy) – (-3x)(y)
=
-3x(4x + xy - y)
The process of finding the factors of an expression is
called FACTORING. Any product can be factored.
However, some numbers are not usually products. An
example of these number is the number 7. Its only factors
are 7 and 1. When a number has itself and 1 as the only
factors, the number is called a PRIME.

When you factor polynomials, you express it as a product

of other polynomials.
LESSON 1:
FACTORING
A. COMMON MONOMIAL FACTOR
Example 1: find the gcf.
7x2 = 7 ∙ x ∙ x
14x = 2 ∙ 7 ∙ x
GIVEN:
GCF = 7X
7x2 + 14x Factor form:
7x2 = 7x ∙ x
14x = 7x ∙ 2

Factor out GCF:

(7x∙x)+ (7x∙2)
GCF (7x∙x)+ (7x∙2)
Leave the remaining
factor inside the
parenthesis:
(x + 2)
7x(x + 2)
Example 2: find the gcf.
8x5 = 2 ∙ 2 ∙ 2 ∙ x ∙ x ∙ x ∙ x ∙ x
12x3 = 3 ∙ 2 ∙ 2 ∙ x ∙ x ∙ x
GIVEN:
28x = 7 ∙ 2 ∙ 2 ∙ x
8x5 - 12x3 + 28x GCF = 4x

Factor out GCF:

(4x∙2x4) - (4x∙3x2) + (4x∙ 7)
GCF (4x∙2x4) - (4x∙3x2) + (4x∙ 7)
Leave the remaining factor
inside the parenthesis:
(2x4 - 3x2 + 7)

4x(2x4 - 3x2 + 7)
Try this:
GIVEN: GCF:
6a2bc2 - 15a3b2c3 + 12a4b3c4 3a2bc2

(3a2bc2 ∙ 2) - (3a2bc2 ∙ 5abc) + Factor out GCFand

(3a2bc2 ∙ 4a2b2c2) leave remaining
factors inside the
parenthesis.

(2 - 5abc + 4a2b2c2)
3a2bc2(2 - 5abc + 4a2b2c2)
A monomial is a factor of
a polynomial if it appears
in every term of the
polynomial
Common Monomial Factors:
example

Definition 1. 28 + 7x CMF: 7
2. -12x2 - 3x2y - 3xy CMF: 3x

it is the
GCF of
• non-example
1. 23x + y NO CMF

polynomial 2. a + b - c NO CMF
