Title: Plant tissues

Learning intention: to be able to recognise the tissues plants have and describe their
function.
Do Now: what do we already know?

Label the parts of the leaf: Keywords:

Cell, tissue, organ, adaptation, epidermal
tissues, palisade mesophyll, spongy
mesophyll, xylem and phloem, meristem
tissue.

D
Explain their function.

Compare and contrast the cells Cell: the basic structural, functional, and
biological unit of all known organisms.
showing in the following pictures : Adaptation: special features that make
the something good for their function.
Activate: what do you need to know?

Hint:
What type of cells are they? Where can
you find them?
Deepening knowledge:

Explain how these two cells are adapted

for their function.

Success criteria:
I can state plant specialised cells and
explain they are adapted for their role.
Pallisade mesophyll tissue
• This cell is a palisade mesophyll cell
• Has many chloroplast and chlorophyll
used for photosynthesis
• Sunlight is absorbed and used in
photosynthesis to help make food for the
plant – glucose and amino acids
• They are tightly packed together
• They have long column shape and are in
the upper part of the leaf
Root hair cell - ROOT
• This is a root hair cell
• it has pointed shape to grow
deep into the soil
• Helps anchor the plant and keep
it stable
• It is packed with mitochondria
to provide energy for active
transport
• Carries mineral ions and water

Plants are made of ______ like ______,
Demonstrate: what do you know now?

______ and _______. Plants organs

work together to make _____ ______.
These can perform the various tasks
that a plant needs to grow - for
example, __________ __________
around the plant. Plant organs are
made of ________, which consist of
the same type of ______.

Deepening knowledge: Describe the levels of organisation in a plant.

Watch the following video and record the function of the
various plant tissues. Cell: the building block of
life
Tissue: a group of same cells
are connected to make a
tissue.
Re-engaging: now what?

Deepening knowledge:

1. Where can you find

stem cells in a growing
plant?
2. What are the stem cells
and what is their

Success criteria: I can state the various plant tissues and explain their role.
Summary of
Leaf
Structure
What are Meristems?

Stem cell: this is an unspecialized cell that has the ability to become specialized through the process differentiation.
This is found in embryos.

Meristems: this is plant stem cells. Found in growing roots and shoots have the ability to become specialized.

Mini test on Plant organisation
Answer the following question in your book
Re-applying: now what do you know?

Q1. True or false? Leaves are organs systems. (1 mark)

Q2. Name the plant tissue where photosynthesis occurs. (1 mark)

Q3. What is the function of the spongy mesophyll tissue? (2 mark)

Q4. Where in a plant is meristem tissue found and what is its function? (2
marks)

Q5. What is diffusion? (3 marks)

Demonstrate

Self assessment :
Q1. True or false? Leaves are organs systems,
False
Q2. Name the plant tissue where photosynthesis occurs.
Palisade mesophyll
Q3. What is the function of the spongy mesophyll tissue?
They allow gases to diffuse in and out of cells
Q4. Where in a plant is meristem tissue found?
In the growing tips of shoots and roots
Q5. What is diffusion?
Diffusion occurs when particles spread. They move from a
region where they are in high concentration to a region
where they are in low concentration.
