At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:


1. define what is communication, business
communication and business writing
2. illustrate the aims of business writing
3. explain the benefits in writing effectively and the
use of English language as the medium of business
communication
• What is Communication?
- derived from the Latin word “communicare” that

means “to share.”

- it is a two-way process by which information is

exchanged between or among individuals through a

common system of symbols, signs, and behavior. (Martinez,

n.d)
• What is Business Communication?
- a process of sharing information between
people within and outside a company in order to
promote an organization’s goals, objectives, aims,
and activities, as well as increase profits.
• Business Writing

- Business writing is any written


communication used in a professional setting,
including emails, memos, and reports.
• Letter writing is highly important in business. There
are many situations involving clients which
necessitate correspondence. This includes replies to
queries, we want something, adjustments, selling
products, etc.

• In the business world, everyone conveys messages


as often as the need arises. Communication is done
by personal visits, phone calls or letters
In business writing …
• If a person can develop his ability to write effectively,
he can include this skill as a business asset.
• Good writing techniques can prepare students for
business careers and advancement. Basic training can
lead to writing various types of letters that are difficult
and challenging. This can serve as a tool to increase
one’s self-confidence, promote good relations and
acquire more sales and profits.
THE AIMS OF BUSINESS
WRITING
1. Conveying Messages
- A writer must remember that his letter is his
substitute or representative on paper.
• 2. Give Essential Information
- A business letter with a lengthy message wastes the
time of the reader but a very short message might lack
essential information.
3. Eliciting Response
An effective business letter is one that is able to get a
response from the reader.
• 4. Building New Friendships and Keeping Old Ones
• Some letters are written to make friends. An example is the sales
letter. It does not sell a product or service directly but it gives a
friendly message to the reader.
• The task of keeping friendly relations is another challenge to the
writer. The friendly feeling must be maintained in dealing with
regular customers. The business letter must always give the
impression of the company’s good name and reputation.
