ENVIROMENTAL SCIENCE
BY: PROF SAHAGUN
GOALS FOR THE DAY
•what is environmental science
•sustainable society
•Pollution and Types of pollution -
•Why do we have environmental problems
•Way of measuring the environmental impact
WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL
SCIENCE?
1. studies how the earth
works, our interaction with
the earth,
2. ways to deal with
environment problems and
live more sustainably.
ENVIRONMENT
The environment is
everything around us. It
includes the living and the
nonliving things (air, water,
and energy) with which we
interact in a complex web of
relationships that connect us
to one another and to the
world we live in.
WHAT IS AN
ENVIRONMENTALLY
SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY ?
meets the needs of its people
without compromising the
resources available for future
generations or the earth's
health.
NATURE’S SURVIVAL
STRATEGIES FOLLOW
THREE PRINCIPLES OF
SUSTAINABILITY
Life depends on solar energy.
Biodiversity provides natural
services.
Chemical/nutrient cycling
means that there is little waste
in nature.
Life depends on
natural capital, natural
resources and natural
services.
Many human activities
can degrade natural
capital.
Solutions are being
found and implemented.
Sustainability begins at
SUSTAINABILITY HAS personal and local
CERTAIN KEY levels.

HOW ARE OUR
ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINTS
AFFECTING THE EARTH?

We are living

Environmental, or natural capital, degradation

is occurring.
We have solutions to these problems that can
be implemented.
WAY OF MEASURING THE
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
IPAT is another
environmental impact model
n the early 1970s, scientists
Paul Ehrlich and John
Holdren developed the IPAT
model.
I (environmental impact) =
P (population size) x
A (affluence/person) x
T (technology’s beneficial and
harmful effects).
I=PXAXT
WHAT IS
POLLUTION
is the introduction of
contaminants into the
natural environment that
cause adverse change.
WHY DO WE HAVE
ENVIROMENTAL PROBLEMS?
Population growth
Unsustainable resource use
Poverty
Excluding environmental cost from market price
Increasing isolation from nature
WHY DO WE HAVE ENVIROMENTAL
PROBLEMS: POPULATION GROWTH
