According to 2011 Census, the total workers including


main and marginal workers constitute 42.0 percent of
the total population of the district. Of the total workers
the share of the main workers is 39.6 percent and the
marginal workers is 2.4 percent. The remaining
population is non-workers.
History

 Surat is a major hub of diamond cutting and polishing.

• Past
The first diamond workshops in Gujarat appeared in Surat
and Navasari in the late 1950s.
A legacy of old Dutch trade links, began after a Surti
entrepreneur returned from East Africa bringing diamond
cutters.

• Present
The rough diamonds are mined in South Africa and other
regions of the African continent, and go from here as smooth
gems to Antwerp, Belgium.

It is the city where the British first land in India.


Benefits

Around the world, 8 out of 10 diamonds on the market are


cut and polished here.
This industry earns India about US$10 billion in annual
exports.

• Surat’s business trade contributes to 90% of the total


national export of diamonds.

• Surat produces 9 million meters of fabric annually, which


accounts for 60% of the total polyester cloth production in
India.

• The overall annual turnover is around 5 billion rupees.

in fiscal year 2016 .

by National Council of Applied Economic Research
(NCAER) and Future Capital Research in their latest study.

•  Surat is selected as the first smart IT city in India which


is being constituted by the Microsoft CityNext Initiative
tied up with IT services majors Tata Consultancy Services
and Wipro.

It is the only city in India to disclose municipal budgets


weekly.

• The Sitilink or Surat BRTS is a bus rapid transit system in


the city.

• Has a network of 245 buses connecting major localities.

• In May 2015, Tech giant IBM chose Surat among 16 global


locations for its smart cities program to help them address
challenges like waste management, disaster
management, and citizen services.

state map of Gujarat.

Thus utilising its networks and linkages would


further add up to the growth of the city.

better transportation planning
