Longitudes and latitudes are imaginary
lines on the surface of the earth.
They help us in labelling every place on
the surface of the earth.

Latitudes
Horizontal lines on the earth which
divides the earth into the Northern
and Southern hemispheres.

Longitudes
Vertical lines on the earth which
divide the earth into Eastern and
Western hemispheres.

It divides the earth into the

countries such as Indonesia,
Kenya, Brazil, Somalia etc.

International Prime Meridian

International Prime Meridian is the
longitude with the 0 degree.

It is also known as the Greenwich


Meridian.

It divides the earth into the Eastern


and Western hemispheres.

It passes through UK, France, Spain,


Algeria, Ghana etc.

It is the reference point of the time


zones.

International Date Line

• The International Date Line is
located halfway around the world
from the prime meridian (0°
longitude).

• The dateline runs from the North


Pole to the South Pole and marks
the divide between the Western and
Eastern Hemisphere.

• It is not straight but zigzags to avoid


political and country borders and to
not cut some countries in half.

• When you cross the International


Date Line from west to east, you
subtract a day, and if you cross the
line from east to west, you add a
day.
