General Chemistry 2

Activity 1
Instructions
Write your answers on 1 whole sheet of paper.
Part 1
1. A solution is prepared by mixing 100.0 g of water, H2O, and
100.0 g of ethanol, C2H5OH. Determine the mole fractions
of each substance. (5pts)
2. The molality of an aqueous solution of sugar (C12H22O11)
is 1.62m. Calculate the mole fractions of sugar and water.
(5Pts)
3. What is the molality of NaCl in an aqueous solution which
is 4.20 molar? The density of the solution is 1.05 x 103 g/L.
(5pts)
Part 2
1. How many moles of the solute will be required to create a solution
that has a concentration of 4.00 M if the volume of the solution that
must be produced is 12.0 liters? (5pts)
2. How many grams of potassium nitrate are needed to make a
solution that is 0.700 M and has a volume of 0.250 L? (5pts)
Part 3
Based from the phase diagrams of water and carbon dioxide, answer
the following questions and justify your answers:

1. You have ice at 263 K (-10.0 ֩C) and 1.0 atm. What could you do to
make the ice sublime?

2. A sample of dry ice (solid CO2) is cooled to 173 K (-100.0 ֩C), and is
set on a table at room temperature (298 K; 25 C ֩ ). At what
temperature is the rate of sublimation and deposition the same
(assume that pressure is held constant at 1 atm)?
