PREPOSITIONS of words used before a noun,
pronoun, or noun phrase to show
direction, time, place, location,
spatial relationships etc.
TYPES OF PREPOSITION
1. PREPOSITION OF TIME:
On, in, at, before, after, during, about, throughout, around,
until etc.
2. PREPOSITION OF PLACE:
 On, at, in, under, over, inside, outside, above, below etc.

3. PREPOSITION OF MOVEMENT:
To, across, through, into, up, over, down, around etc.
PREPOSITION OF TIME:
(On, in, at, before, after, etc.)
•For years, months, seasons, centuries and times
of day, we use the preposition IN.
•For days, dates and specific holiday days, we use the
preposition ON.
•For times and festivals, we use the preposition AT.
USE PREPOSITION OF TIME:
1. My birthday falls _______ January.
2. Birds often migrate ______ spring and autumn.
3. My great-grandmother was born _______ 1906.
4. Breakfast is a meal which is generally eaten _____ the
morning.
5. My parents grew up _____ the 1960s.
6. My vacation ends ______ Monday.
7. My brother John was born _______ September 3rd.
8. Meet me _______7:30.
PREPOSITION OF PLACE:
•IN is used when referring to something that is inside or within
confined boundaries.
Eg: The girls are playing in the garden.
She lives in the city.
•AT is used when referring to something at a specific point
Eg: I will see you at the airport.
•ON is used when referring to something with a surface.
Eg: The images are on the page.
USE PREPOSITION OF PLACE:
1. Jessie waited for Jim ______ the corner.
2. I’m growing tomatoes ______ my garden.
3. Marie was born _______ Paris, France.
4. Please place the bouquet _______ the table.
5. I really wish you would stop throwing your dirty clothes
_______ the floor.
6. We spent a quiet evening _______home.
PREPOSITION OF MOVEMENT:
 TO shows movement to a specific position/ place.
Eg: I am going to the hospital.
 ACROSS refers to moving from one side to another.
 Eg: She swam across the river.
 THROUGH refers to moving directly inside something and out
the other end.
 Eg: The train went through the tunnel.
 INTO refers to entering or looking inside something.
Eg: The dog was hiding inside the house.
USE PREPOSITION OF MOVEMENT:
1. He has gone on vacation _______ France.
2. I will go _____ bed when I am tired.
3. Rebecca and Judi swam ______ the lake.
4. The bullet Ben shot went _______the window.
5. James went ________ the room.
6. They stared _______ the darkness.
