GRAVITATIONAL POTENTIAL ENERGY
-Energy stored by object because of its position relative to other
objects.
SYMBOLS: GPE, U, V
UNIT: JOULE (J)
EQUATION: GPE= mgh
m= GPE/ gh
h= GPE/mg
g= GPE/mh
Objectives:
•To understand gravitational potential energy
•to be able to solve for GPE as well as the derivation of formulas

Gravitational potential energy - is the energy that's within an object when it is moved
against a gravitational force.

Ex. If the box is raised above the ground, it will acquires potential energy
Note: the objects gravitational potential energy depend on its weight, as well as
how high it is from the ground.

Note: the objects gravitational potential energy depend on its weight, as well as how high it is
from the ground.
m= mass (kg) if grams needed to convert into
kg

g= acceleration due to gravity (9.81m/s²)

h= change in height in meters(m)

GPE= gravitational potential energy (J)

PROBLEM NO. 1
A monkey swinging from the branch of a tree
suddenly he sees a tiger below and swings up to a
higher for safety. When he swings to the higher
branch his potential energy increases 215J. If the
monkey's mass is 6.5kg, what is the change in
height of the monkey ?
Given:
Solution:
GPE=215J h= 215J/6.5kg(9.8m/s²)
m= 6.5kg h= (215kg m²/s² )/ 63.7kg m/s²
h=3.37 m
g= 9.8 m/s²
DERIVATION;
h=? GPE=mgh
equation: mg mg

h= GPE/mg h=GPE
mg
PROBLEM NO. 2
A potted plant sits on the shelf of a flower
store where it has 150J of gravitational
potential energy relative to the floor. If the
plant is 2.5m above the floor, what is the
mass of the plant?
Given: Solution:
m= 150J / (9.8m/s²)(2.5m)
GPE=150J
m=150 kg m²/s² / (24.5 m²/s²)
g= 9.8 m/s²
m= 6.12 kg
h=2.5m DERIVATION;
m=? GPE=mgh
gh gh
equation:
m=GPE
m= PE/gh gh
PROBLEM NO. 3
Calculate the gravitational
energy in 455kg boulders that
rest on a cliff 155 meters high.
Solution:
Given: GPE= (455kg)(9.8m/s²)(155m)
GPE=? GPE= (455kg) (1,519m²/s²)
GPE=691,145 kg m²/s²
g= 9.8 m/s² GPE= 691,145 J
h=155m
OR
m=455kg
GPE=455kg(9.8m/s²)(155m)
GPE=4,459 N(155m)
equation: GPE=691,145 J

GPE= mgh
