Mythological creatures of Latin

5th Grade
Centaur
• A Roman mythology creature that has a head, arms and torso of a
human. Body and legs of a horse.
• Many writers say that this creature is caught between “two
worlds”. Animal vs. Human world. Other writers say that it
reprents the “untamed nature spirit”.
• “Inhabited the region of Magnesia and Mount Pelion in Thessaly,
the Foloi oak forest in Elis, and the Malean peninsula in southern
Laconia.”
• Was said that some drew the chariot of Constantine the Great and
his family.
• Later on their were female centaurs, that were sisters and wives
on the male centaurs
harpy
• Was in Greek and Roman mythology.
• It was a monster with the body of a bird and
the face of a woman. Their name means
“snatchers”.
• They would kidnap people who would do evil
and steal food from their “victims”.
Minotaur
• Greek mythology creature that had a head of
a bull and the body of a man.
• Lived in center of Labyrinth ( like a maze area)
• Theseus killed the Minotaur to take throne.

Chimera
• Creature composed of three different
creatures, head of a lioness, a goats head and
serpent's head on the tail. Angry animal that is
fire-breathing.
• Causes total destruction, was defeated
Belelrophon.
Cererus
• Three headed dog that lived in the
underworld. They have a serpent's tail, a
mane of snakes, and a lion's claws.
Cyclops
• One-eyed giant, eye is in the middle of the
forehead
• Most well know was Polyphemus
• Polyphemus was tricked and blinded by
Ulysses
Scylla
• Six-headed sea serpent
• Body had 12 tentacle-like legs and a cat's tail,
with 4-6 dogs around the waist.
• Creature attacked ships and its sailors
