Go Lovely
Rose
What is this
story about?
An overprotective father makes a
fool of himself searching for his
nineteen-year-old daughter in his
pyjamas and slippers when she is
out late playing cards with her
boyfriend and his mother.
My opinions
Personally this story is my favorite, it’s
shorter that the rest, but it really shows how
the father loves his daughter. He does
overreact just a little, she is nineteen and
grown up, but I think its justified because
she is still his daughter.
Exercise!
He did not want Susie to… …she was little.
I don’t know why… …get to bed.
I must go home and… …see him in his
I never worried when… pyjamas.
…I’m worrying like this.

The Daffodil
Sky
What is this
story about?
It’s a love story that quickly becomes
filled with jealousy, and later on
regret.
My opinion
Although this is my least favorite story of the three I
still think it is good, just not for me. The reason I
don’t like it is because it feels rushed. I think the
man and the woman would need a little bit more time
to develop. I also think we need just a bit more
background as to why the man would react and do
the stuff he did.
Exercise!
Two railwaymen were playing... …and bought them all
The customers saw the shining …cards in one corner of the bar
yellow daffodils... …held the umbrella over them both
Osborne is as... …honest as the day is long
She ran out and...
03
The Dam
What is this
story about?
A man transfers his affections from a
woman to her daughter, resulting in
tragedy.
My opinions
Although my favorite is the first story, this one is a close
second. At first, the mother meets a guy at a hotel. He clearly
likes her and she likes him, but she doesn’t show it. Then her
daughter came to the hotel, and he fell in love with her
because she wasn’t cold, as supposed to her mother. It’s the
longest story out of the three but it’s very exciting and I would
recommend it.
Exercise!
Gerda sat under the grape vines… …the high wall above the dam.
If it gets cold we can… …go into the little restaurant.
These grapes are wonderfully sweet… …and sketched until twelve o’clock.
The girl and her mother walked along… …and they smell so lovely.

Connections
Connections
All three stories are connected with each other. They all have elements of
love, though trough different aspects. In the first one we have fatherly
love, the second we have jealous love, and in the third we have a mother
and a daughter who love the same man, which is also a type of jealous
love but much more intense.

All three stories are very descriptive of the surroundings and feelings.
Such as: “red and yellow and white, very soft and sweet-smelling”,
“smell of smoke and beer, sandwiches and warm bodies”, “she
looked ad him with cold blue eyes”.
A short letter to the author
Dear Mr H. E. Bates,
I have just read Go lovely Rose and my favorite story is definitely Go lovely Rose. It was
heartwarming and I loved reading it, I really don’t have anything negative to say about
it. On the other hand my least favorite is The daffodil sky. I just thing the story needed
more development, and it lacks detail. The story itself is fine but, as I said, it lacks
detail. The stories were definitely not what I expected and they surprised me. To make
the long story short I really enjoyed your writing style and would read your stories in
my spare time. The way you describe things in the stories is outstanding!
Yours sincerely Milica.

for your
