Installation of Electrical
Equipments

Prepared By: Aesha K. Joshi(LEE)

Flow of presentation
Introduction
Objectives of unit
Unloading of heavy equipment
Inspection on arrival of equipment
Storage
Foundation of machines
Alignment of electrical machines
Tools for installation work
Installation of transformer
Installation of Switchgear
Installation of Induction motor
Introduction
Many type of static and rotating electrical machines
are used in industry

It becomes essential for an electrical engineer to be

aware of installation, commissioning and maintenance
of these machines.
Objectives of unit
To get idea about unloading of heavy electrical
equipment at site
To get idea about inspection on arrival of equipment
and before installation
To learn about foundation of machines, alignment of
electrical machines
To know about tools/instruments necessary for
installation
Safety precautions
Technical report, Inspection, storage and handling of
transformer, switchgear and motors
Unloading of heavy equipment
The heavy electrical equipment is unloaded from ship
or wagon and brought to site by truck or trailer with
the help of some lifting devices without getting
damaged.

Proper plan should be prepared before receiving heavy

equipment at the site
Conti…
The following points should be considered before
unloading the heavy equipment:

 Overall size of the equipment

 Weight of the equipment
 Information of fragile parts and accessories of the
equipments
 Selection of proper lifting devices and safety
precautions while using lifting devices
Inspection on arrival of equipment
Inspection of heavy equipment should be done
immediately after it is unloaded

It should be checked that no damage is done during

transit.

It should be checked by comparing with the advice

note that no part is lost during transit
Storage
Normally the equipment is not installed immediately
after it is unloaded so it becomes necessary to store
the equipment properly.

The place of storage should be free from dust,

moisture, smoke etc.

There should be proper ventilation at storage

Foundation of machines
The following factors considered while preparing
foundation of machines:

Type of machines
Height of foundation
Shear resistance of soil
Settlement
Resonance
Operating speed
Vibrations
Alignments of electrical machines
In rotating electrical machine, one is driving machine
and one is driven machine. Both are coupled together
and their axes should be in straight line which is called
alignment
Conti…
Following procedure are followed in aligning the two
shafts:
1. First of all the two machines are placed on foundation.
Nuts are kept loose
2. Axes of both machines are set in one line in horizontal
plane
3. The axes of both machines are placed in one line in
vertical plane
4. Centering of the axes in height and sides is done
5. Alignment is checked by repeating steps 2 and 3 as
mentioned above
6. Step 4 is repeated
Tools for installation
Two types of tools are necessary for installation work

 To lift the machine

 To fit the machine

Following tools are necessary for installation:

 Spirit level
 Tri square
 Spanner-Wrenches
 Screw Driver
Installation of Transformer
The following points are included in the installation of
transformer:
a. Location of transformer
b. Facilities of maintenance
c. Foundation
d. Cabling
e. Bushing and cable box
f. Connections
g. Protection against risk of fire
h. Safety precautions
Installation of Switchgear
The following points should be checked while installing switchgear

Foundation and other civil engineering work

Assembly of the circuit breaker and its mechanism
Alignment of whole unit
Grouting of foundation
Fitting of loose instruments
Adjustment of circuit breaker, contact travel etc.
Connection of interlock etc.
Filling up oil in oil circuit breaker
Earthing connection
Other wiring
General inspection
Testing and commissioning
Installation of Induction motor
The following points should be included in
installation of induction motor

Safety
Location
Foundation and leveling
Insulation resistance and drying out
Alignment
