Human population:

Past and present Mr.Timm

June 13th 2022
WHEN AND WHY  DID THE WORLD POPULATION GROW?

THE WORLD
THE WORLD POPULATION
POPULATION GROWTH RATE
INCREASED FROM 1 DECLINED FROM 2.2%
BILLION IN THE 1800 PER YEAR 50 YEARS
TO 7.9 BILLION TODAY AGO TO 1% PER
YEAR.
Why does the world population keep increasing and
not decreasing?
• We have removed the main issues that would cause population to decrease which includes
food shortages and dying off from disease
• Thanks to food transportation, pesticides, and plowing/harvesting large areas we can make as
much food as you want
• Secondly, thanks to advanced technology it allowed us to improve hygiene; clean water
supply, and link sewage systems to remove waste
• This resulting in longer life expectancy making population the size it is today
• If we all only lived to 30, there’d be half the population on the planet
Pt 2. More contributions
New medicines provide mothers
and children a better chance of
surviving childbirth and
childhood complications

PRESENT:15 women die in

pregnacy or childbirth per
100,000 births

PAST:more than 600 women per

100, 000 births
Time vs deaths from childbirth
Pt.3 Inventions of vaccinations

Vaccination is one of the most powerful way to save lives and

decreases wiping away a large group of people

For example, smallpox is now extinct when it used to kill millions

of people

Currently 3 million children are saved annually by vaccination

Who has their covid-19 vaccination?
Pt 4. Inventions of antibiotics

• Antibiotics save many lives from

simple bacterial infections that
used to kill
• Over 200,000 American lives are
saved annually
WORLD POPULATION FROM 10,000 BCE  TO
TODAY
The chart shows the increasing
number of people living on our planet
over the last 12,000 years
WORLD
POPULATION FROM
10,000 BCE  TO Fun fact: the world population today
is 1860 times the size of what it was
TODAY  12,000 years go

This chart also showed how quickly

all of this growth happened
What is the
demographic
transition model?
Past and present
• In the past our population was not high at all for the size of our earth, so we had no problem
with it.
• Now in the present, the human population is increasing higher and higher each day and our
earth is at its capacity
• This is now a number one problem we should be trying to solve before the earth can't take it
anymore.
• That brings us to this question
How many people can
the earth actually hold?

Fun fact: did you know that if everyone on

the earth agreed to become a vegetarian (like
Sam) we could eliminate all areas with
livestock which would make room for 10
billion additional people.
What happens if we don’t have • A lot of resources say that we will not run out of
enough room for everyone on space, but we will be extremely overpopulated.

earth? • It's not that we will run out of space but more
resources.
Solutions to overpopulation
(things you can do)

Consider Consider adoption

Raise Raise awareness about overpopulation on social media

Educate your teenage children about sex and

Educate contraception early, without taboos

Vote for politicians who value impacts of population

Vote growth and solutions
