SOURCE CONSIDERATION

• ORGANIC MATTER
• A.Sapropelic decomposition product of microscopic plant and
phytoplankton.
H/C ratio ranges in 1.3-1.7.

• B .Humic Maturation product of microscopic land plant.

it has a lower H/C in around 0.9.

• These composition difference leads to a more rigorous classification of

kerogen type that leads to generation of fossil fuel.
KEROGEN CLASSIFICATION BY TISSOT.
• Classification was originally devised by Tissot in term of Krevelen diagram a plot of H/C against O/C ratio .
• Three main kerogen type and with a forth type having little or no relevance to petroleum generatoion .

• Arrow mark in the fig. represent compositional trend of different kerogens with
progressive burial and maturation and all coalesce towards towards the origin,
represented by pure carbon.

TYPE I and II kerogen –yield oil , wet (i.e high condensable fraction) and
dry gas(mainly methen).

TYPE III kerogen-generally yield dry gas .

• A summary of hydrocarbon yields from two different source rock is shown in
above fig.

• Fig -a shows the quantity of petroleum product derived from a source rock
comprising TYPE II kerogen and differentiate between the condensate,
comprising high(C18) and low (C2-C8) molecular wt.oils, and dominantly
methane gas component.

• Fig- b shows equivalent scenario for a source rock sediment comprising

kerogene that only gas prone which on maturation initially yield only minor
amount wet gas but mainly dry gas .

• Source rock considerstions are generally imp.during during petroleum
