Game
A list-domain-and-range match-up! Half the cards
will list a domain and range, while the other half
contains the function associated with that domain
and range. A match is made when the correct
domain and range are flipped in the same turn as
its corresponding function.

What is Domain and Range?

Domain - is the set of all the first coordinates of the ordered pairs in a function or the x values.

Range - is the set of all the second coordinates of the ordered pairs in a function or the y values.
Determine the domain
and range in the given
set of ordered pairs of
an equation.
Example:

Consider the relation {(0,7),(0,8),(1,7),(1,8),(1,9),(2,10)}.

Here, the relation is given as a set of ordered pairs. The domain is the
set of x -coordinates, {0,1,2} and the range is the set of y-coordinates,
{7,8,9,10}.
Consider the
correspondence shown in
each diagram in the next
slide.
The domain of the function can be
determined from a mapping diagram by
listing all of the values in the column
representing the input values. The range of
the function can be determined from a
mapping diagram by listing all of the values
in the column representing the output values.

Domain = {0, 4, 7, 8, 10}

Range = {1, 3, 5}
Domain = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}

Range = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}
Determine the domain
and range given an
equation.
To find the domain and range, we simply solve
the equation y=f(x) to determine the values of the
independent variable x and obtain the domain.
Restriction to find the domain and range of a function:

• The denominator of a function cannot be equal to zero

• The number under a square root sign (radicand) must be

positive.
