Theory of Elasticity and Plasticity
Introduction
Theory of elasticity and plasticity is a part of mechanics that deals with the assessment of
stresses, strains and deformation, which are produced by external forces or changes in
temperature in solid bodies.
Mechanics is a branch of science that studies conditions of
equilibrium or of motion of bodies when subjected to
forces or displacement.
Theoretical mechanics studies the simplest form of motion
of bodies in which a body or a part of a body modifies its
position with respect to a reference system.

Applied mechanics deals with the response of bodies

(solids and fluids) or systems of bodies to external forces
e.g. vibration of a structure, buckling of a column and flow
of oil under pressure.
Theory of Elasticity and Plasticity
Introduction Computational mechanics is concerned with use of
computational methods like simulation and numerical
techniques using computers to study events governed by the
principles of mechanics.
Continuum mechanics deals with the analysis of the
kinematics and the mechanical behaviour of materials
modelled as a continuous mass rather than as discrete
particles.

Solid Mechanics is a branch of science that studies

conditions of equilibrium or of motion of solid bodies
when subjected to forces or displacement.

Fluid Mechanics is a branch of science that studies

conditions of equilibrium or of motion of fluid when
subjected to forces or displacement.
