LINE CONFIGURATION IN COMPUTER
NETWORKS

• What is Line Configuration?

Line configuration refers to the physical arrangement of the transmission
medium and the devices connected to it in a computer network. In other
words, it’s the way in which the devices are connected to the
transmission medium, which can be a wired or wireless medium. The
line configuration affects the way data is transmitted and received, and it
can have a significant impact on network performance.

• Why is Line Configuration Important?

Line configuration is important because it affects network performance
and reliability. The way in which devices are connected to the
transmission medium can affect the amount of bandwidth available, the
speed at which data can be transmitted, and the ability of the network
to handle traffic. By choosing the right line configuration, you can
ensure that your network operates smoothly and efficiently.

There are two ways to connect the devices:

• Point-to-Point connection
• Multipoint connection
POINT-TO-POINT CONNECTION
a) A point-to-point connection provides a dedicated link between two devices.
b) The entire capacity of the link is reserved for transmission between those two devices.
c) Most point-to-point connections use an actual length of wire or cable to connect the two
ends, but other options such as microwave or satellite links are also possible.

d) Point to point network topology is considered to be one of the easiest and most conventional
networks topologies.

e) It is also the simplest to establish and understand.

• Example: Point-to-Point connection between the remote control and Television for changing
the channels.
POINT-TO-POINT CONNECTION
MULTIPOINT CONNECTION
It is also called Multidrop configuration.

In a multipoint configuration, multiple devices are connected to a single

transmission medium. This can be done using a hub, switch, or router,
which allows multiple devices to share the same transmission medium.
This type of configuration is commonly used in LANs (local area
networks) and allows multiple devices to communicate with each other.
MULTIPOINT CONNECTION
There are two kinds of Multipoint Connections:

• Spatially Shared Line Configuration

In this line configuration, several devices can share a single channel simultaneously.
• Time Shared Line Configuration
In this line configuration, users must take turns using the link.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Different Line Configurations
Each type of line configuration has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Let’s take a closer look at these.

Point-to-Point

Advantages:
•Simple and easy to set up
•Provides a direct connection between two devices
•Can provide a high level of security

Disadvantages:
•Limited to two devices
•Can be expensive to set up over long distances
•Can be difficult to manage and maintain
Advantages and Disadvantages of Different Line Configurations

Multipoint

Advantages:
•Allows multiple devices to communicate with each other
•Provides a cost-effective way to connect multiple devices
•Can be easily expanded to add more devices

Disadvantages:
•Bandwidth must be shared among all devices
•If the transmission medium fails, all devices lose connectivity
•Can be difficult to troubleshoot if there are issues
SELF CHECK
On a clean ½ cross wise yellow pad paper. Answer the following.
1. Give a brief and concise discussion of what is Network.
2. In the Line Configuration in Computer Networks, what are
the two ways to connect the devices?
3. Discuss and draw a diagram
A. Point-To-Point Connection
B. Multipoint Connection
4. Give at least one disadvantage of PPP and Multipoint.
