PRESENT TENSES IN ENGLISH

PRESENT SIMPLE

• Uses :
• To talk about habits or routines
• To talk about fact or opinion

• Time expressions:
• Always- usually- frequently- generally- often- sometimes- seldom- rarely-
hardly ever- never- from time to time- in general- now and than- once in a
while.
PRESENT SIMPLE

• Examples :
• I usually walk 30 minutes every morning.
• Water boils at 100C degrees
• She lives in London.
• He likes his house
PRESENT PERFECT

• Uses :
• Events at an unstated time in the past
• Repeated past actions at unstated time

• Time expressions
• Already- always- ever- just- so far- up to now- yet- still- recently- lately-
once,twice, three(four, five…) times- how many times…? .
PRESENT PERFECT

• Examples:
• Have you ever went to London?.
• I have already returned the order.
• He has went home.
• She has eaten her food.
PRESENT CONTINUOUS

• Uses :
• Something in progress at the moment of speaking.
• Over specific period of time .
• Reference to the future.

• Time expressions :
• Now- right now- at the moment- today- this morning- this year- in a few
minutes- at 7:00 – tomorrow….etc.
PRESENT CONTINUOUS

• Examples:
• She is going to school .
• The boys are playing in the back yard.
• I am cooking pasta for dinner.
• They are running right now.
PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS

• Uses:
• A period of time from the past to the present
• Unspecified time in the past

• Time expressions:
• How long…?
• Since +a period of time in the past
• For + a period of time
• All + a period of time
PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS

• Examples:
• I have been reading this book for 2 hours
• How long has she been crying?
• He has been running since 6 am
• They have been talking about their trip for 2 hours
