ZERO WASTE TO LANDFILL(ZWL)

•As the title suggests, Zero Waste to Landfill is a

philosophy of reducing the amount of waste that ends up
in landfill.
•Some benefits include:
•Cost
•Environment
•Marketing
•Compliance
Zero Waste initiatives describe a longer-
ZERO WASTE term commitment to reducing waste
output dramatically overtime until
VS ZERO eventually the business creates no waste
at all.
WASTE TO
LANDFILL(Z
WL) Zero Waste to Landfill is a clear drive to
divert as much waste as possible from
landfill and is an achievable target
businesses take on as a goal.
WASTE MANAGEMENT: M&M
Long history of managing waste by clean and responsible manufacturing.

In 2017, Anirban Ghosh took over the leadership of the chief sustainability
officer.

He was motivated by recurrent fires at the Deonar dumping ground in

Mumbai, which caused health issues for the residents.

The corporate sustainability group decided on ZWL, an internationally

recognized waste management system.
Each part of the engine production
process generated both hazardous and
non-hazardous waste.

Production Non-hazardous production waste:

packaging scrap, wooden pallets,
related rejected engine parts.
waste
Hazardous waste: oil, grinding mud, and
oil-soaked cotton, Sludge oil-soaked
cotton in addition to empty tins and
drums.
Production Waste: Camshaft Grinding Waste
•Initially, it experimented with making paver blocks by grinding mud waste
•Next, it attempted to use the mud, along with bitumen, for road construction
•An innovation worked to use the grinding mud waste as a baking media in the production process.
•M&M’s focus now shifted to recovering as much value from the waste as possible.
•Magnetic separators were used to attract the ferrous materials
•When none of these innovations showed promise, the company finally decided to take the help of
external agencies to see if a better solution was possible.
NON-PRODUCTION WASTE

Waste from utilities e.g., oil

Office waste e.g., paper, Cafeteria waste e.g., utensils,
from generator sets and
plastic and broken glasses food waste
batteries

Packaging generated a large

Waste from dispensary e.g.,
Most of non production amount of waste. Wooden
paper, plastic, glass, and
waste was non hazardous packaging was replaced with
biomedical waste
recyclable packaging.

• Restaurants, buildings and factories need efficient wet waste
management systems.
• Example – Vegetable peels , used tea bags, fruits, etc.

What is Dry Waste?

• Dry materials that have been contaminated with a hazardous

chemical waste.
• This waste must be handled, stored, and disposed of properly.
• Examples of dry waste: Contaminated soils. Dried chemicals that
are in scrapable amounts on various surfaces.
