Formula for the Mean of the Probability
Distribution
Example 1: If two coins are tossed,
the possible outcomes are HH, HT,
TH, or TT. If X is the random
variable for the number of head.
Example 2: What is the mean
outcome for rolling a single die.
Example 3. Supposed three coins are
tossed. Let Y be the random variable
representing the number of tails. Find the
mean of the probability distribution.
Activity
Solve the following problems.
1. Supposed four coins are tossed. Let X be the
random variable representing the number of tails.
Find the mean of the probability distribution.
2. Two fair dice are thrown simultaneously. Let X be
the sum of the two outcomes in throwing the two fair
dice. Construct the discrete probability distribution
and find the mean of the probability distribution.
EVENT: Supposed six coins are tossed.
RANDOM VARIABLE: Let Y be the random variable representing
the number of tails.
