INDIGENOUS PEOPLE

IN NORTHERN
PHILIPPINES
GADDANG
 ”Gadang" or "Ga'dang," derives
from "ga" meaning "heat" or
"fire," and "dang" meaning
"burn," and means "burned by
heat.“
 They speak Ilocano, the Gaddang

language is closely related to


Agta, Atta, Ibanag, Isneg, Itawis,
Malaweg, and Yogad. 
The Gaddang people found in:
•Northern Nueva Vizcaya, particularly
Bayombong, Solano, and Bagabag on the
western bank of the Magat River;
•Southwestern Isabela, particularly Santiago City,
Angadanan, Cauayan City, and Reina Mercedes
on the Cagayan River
•Western Isabela, along the edges of Kalinga and
Bontoc, in the towns of Antatet, Dalig, and the
barrios of Gamu and Tumauini for the non-
Christianized communities;
•and eastern parts of Ifugao and Mountain
Province
The Gaddang Way of Life .

 Two farming systems 


• Uma cultivation - mabini (rice-growing season) from July to December,
and the mamula (season of other domesticated plants growing) from
January to July.
• Plow farming - rice-corn season from April to October, and the tobacco
season from October to March.
Gaddang houses  Gaddang lived in houses built on high
branches of trees. These afung
(dwellings) were built 6 to 20 meters
from ground level. It is made of cogon
grass and bamboo.
Leadership was held by a village chief
who was supported by a class of warriors.

IBANAG / YBANAG

 Ibanag is derived from the prefix "I“ which may refer to "native,
resident, or people of" and bannag which means "river“, and thus
means “people of the river,”
The Ibanag found in:
 The Ibanag are found
principally in Tuguegarao,
Solana, Aparri, Peñablanca,
Lal-lo, Camalaniugan, Abulug,
Buguey, and Amulung in
Cagayan, and in Cabagan,
Ilagan, Tumauini, San Pablo,
Santa Maria, Santo Tomas,
San Mariano, Angadanan, and
Reina Mercedes in Isabela.
The Ibanag Way of Life

 The Ybanags are lowland farmers that used to inhabit the area along the 
Cagayan coast but migrated further inland. 
 Urayan- holding the executive powers, an ukom or judge, and a kammaranan
who made policies and regulations for the community.
 Ibanag speak the same language under the same name.

Language  Most of the Ibanag can speak Ilocano. It is closely related
to Gaddang, Itawis, Agta, Atta, Yogad, Isneg and Malaweg.
